I dont know if this is a good idea but iv been thinkin bout doin this. Another reason i havent done it yet is cuz im afraid ill lose money not gain money. Anyways do yall think if i take the EPA type 1 608 exam and get certified i could post a ad up on craiglist and say somethin like $10 or $15 to remove freon from a frig or freezer? I know the equipment needed is pretty expensive so thats why i think id lose money. Do u think there would be any takers that would pay me to do that or am i out of my mind?

Interesting idea. I have had experince in other businesses and had all kinds of assuances that what I was going to do was a great idea. After I went ahead with the investment those same people who recommended it did not want to work with me. They said they already had a guy to do that.

So if you can justify the expense of the equipment etc in your own recycling business I would go ahead. If its totally on the speculation that others want the service then look at others already providing your service. If no one else is currently providing this service in your area it may just not be needed. My thought is perhaps appliance stores might need someone to perform this service. Also it could be an "in" to get recyclables. Best of luck, Mike

I go with miked on this one. DO NOT depend on what others say or even that other people will act in a certain way (wanting your service). I invested $30,000 in a "sure thing" that "everybody" told me they wanted. About four years later, I quit beating a dead horse and waved good-bye to $28,000 (I made $2,000 on a $30,000 investment).
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Good point Mike.

Appliance stores have a tech that does all the repairs, he has certificate or would not work there.

Dealing with it is a pain!!!

I personaly want to get my cert too. What I need to figure out is what the companies pay for the full containers of refrigerant. MOst scrappers are not going to pay you $10 bucks when they can just pop the lines. Last week I saw a guy pop an AC unit at the scrap yard and then tore it apart right there and the yard baught all the parts. I would think if your collecting it and selling it. removing it for free might be the way to go. I know every place in denver I called to get evac done wanted 100 bucks or more. that what made me look into getting the cert myself. And you can get a reclaim unit for under $500 if you look hard enuff. Pawn shops will usualy have one. Ive seen one in almost every pawn shop ive been too in the past year. them fools buy all kinds of stupid tools

I did get the cert. a few years ago. I took the class at the local community college and the instreuctor administered the test. This is in N.C. so other areas might be a little different. I was taught the dangers of these materials and how they were to be handled and disposed of. What they didnot teach was any hands on use of any equipement. If I wanted to know how to operate the equipement I woudl have to be taught on the job or take their two year havc course.

Check out the local supply house to see if they buy and how much they pay. Best of luck, Mike.

There is a large market for reclaimed refrigerant (refrigerant that has been cleaned and tested per EPA specs). Did you mean recovered refrigerants?

Some of it I reclaim and package myself for sale locally, some of it goes to SLC. Recovered refrigerants go from 1.50 a pound (R134A) to 10.00 a pound (R502).

Most refrigerators have 6 to 10 ounces in them. Window a/c's are usually 1 to 2 pounds. Beverage coolers have about 2 pounds in them. Outdoor condensing units have 3 to 6 pounds in them.

Could you link the SLC website for selling your refrigerant? I think im going to go get certified and look for a cheap recovery unit and offer to do it here in denver. Just need to find someplace that will give me bottles to keep it in and buy them when they are full.

I took an a/c course as part of the automotive technician program at my local community college so they trained me to use the recovery machine. The certification test is kind of a joke, it's like 15 questions open book and WHEN you pass it you get a card to put in your wallet and a cert to frame on your wall and you're certified for life. So it's really easy.

The certification course only teaches the EPA rules. I'll see if I can attach a link. Or you can google Remtec for a place to start. All of them pretty much prefer you ship in 1000 pound tanks. Some will take tanks as small as 125 pounds. But you need to have your own bottles to start with.

For doing cars I think you need a different cert but this will take care of the scrap appliance part of it though. Im seriously considering doing this myself and then selling the refrigerant. I know a couple months back I found a place online that would give you canisters for free and buy them when they were full and send you empties but I didnt book mark it and need to find it again.
Did you ever find those buyers?? Very curious. Considering getting certified. I dont want to spew contaminants into the air.
