Big turd?
Big turd?
I'm down a few credits, best part is I bought a voice command Garmin GPS, I had my choice of an Aussie lassie or a British las to talk to when I got bored and came up with a plot and tittle for a book I want to write.
The plot had started when I purchased my first tank of fuel for the trip, a young University student operating the till studying to be an accountant will be the main character in my book if she agrees to participate in the scheme I have pictured in my mind, the scheme will take a year to play itself out in its entirety.
My first choice of a tittle is " The Higher Command" watch for the book to appear at your favorite book store as a number one best seller and possibly made into a movie. I do not believe anything like it has been attempted before so everything between the covers is new material.
It may appear as fiction to some.
Off again to look at another truck and crane truck to make a buck, this one is a bit more money. That GPS has already given me an idea, from a website that specializes in farm and rural maps I can purchase the whole Province with the quarter sections laid out logically with this information I can find any rural farm within seconds and hot my target without wasting valuable fuel.
The plan is to offer hot shot pick up and delivery to the local farmers, Wow just think of all the scrap I'll find while performing my duties as a delivery driver. I may have to upgrade my transportation of dangerous goods TQ to handle the chemicals.
I love being retired.
Now to find someone who can edit my ramblings to put it all into a good story worth while reading. I have even considered using tape then having this transcribed.

Glad your taking it in stride, keep us posted on the next rig. Let us know what your "Pen name" is going to be for the book so we can talk it up when it hits New York Best Sellers list.

This is the truck I ended up with a decent Palfinger crane, 7,000 lbs lift hydraulic extension with 10,000 lb pullmaster hydraulic winch. mounted on main boom.
Congrats Gus...Still planning on mounting it on the bus chassis?
The wheel base on this truck is a bit shorter than I would have liked in the beginning, but after thinking it over realized the short wheel base can access more difficult areas.
Truck has air brakes, and it's rigged up with air and pintle hitch and receiver for a trailer, As for the bus, in the spring will chop it up then use the frame for my new trailer to tow behind the truck whenever needed.
Bus has air brakes so this project is going to be a snap.
Some of the junkers I get people want their tires and rims back so I'm going to tap into the air system to run an impact wrench whenever someone wants tires and rims back.
Been busy most of the afternoon moving some heavy stuff around the yard making room for more.
This is crane number four that I have owned, and it's the best one to date. I'm pleased with it.
Congrats. Wish I had one.
Great truck, it pays to keep looking, Mike.
Working both ends of my trap line, the two cars loaded going to the yard later today. I have 14 cars on the other end to haul in over the weekend.
This is crane number four for me, the first Palfinger had I known such a great crane existed would have bought one first time around. Took a bit of getting used to the controls my other cranes had them vertically these are horizontal. Also the Palfinger is so easy to stow away after using it make all the other cranes I've owned pitifully sad.
I'm thinking that the trailer planed for a build will haul another four cars behind the truck.

I almost screamed at work when I saw this on my phone. I composed myself and waited until I got home to form a rational response to this picture. Why oh why Gus is there a 1967 AMC Ambassador on the bottom of that pile? That looks to be a decent car there. Granted its a four door sedan and being from Canada it probably has a fair amount of rot, couldn't it have been parted out? At least the trim and other small pieces? I know these aren't that popular to be restored but on the other hand there aren't repro companies churning out parts for these either. I know you have your reasons but it just turned my stomach to see this. I love reading your posts and seeing your pictures but I could have gone without seeing this one
My offer still stands from when I was new to the forum: if anyone scraps an old car or truck, I will pay the postage cost if you will send the serial tag/plate to me. I know it caused a slight debate when I said that before but they all go into my personal collection/database. You can't steal a car with only a serial tag, contrary to some people's beliefs. I just want to document any old car that is "no longer with us."

I took two cars from my end, the 14 turned out to be 8 and an old swather which I will pick up on another trip. Slept in the truck last night and froze my arse off got wet in the rain this afternoon and decided it was time to it the road for home.
One good thing is that these scrappers were all older stuff with some weight to them, the crane works good but has a problem, The hydraulic oil tank is made from fiber glass and it has a large crack or rather hole in it. I'll fabricate another out of 10 gauge sheet metal and weld the seams, the straps that hold the fuel tanks are rotted.
When I go to the Colony to get my sheet metal for the new hydraulic oil tank, I'll get them to shear me some stainless steel to make new straps for the fuel tanks.
Because of these small problems the truck has not been safetied yet. Engine runs good and is sound, plenty of power and reasonably economical on fuel - used $170.00.
It's illegal to remove a Vin tag here in Canada, if I got caught hauling a car without one it would be an instant ticket along with a lengthly court case. Been there done that.
Yea the AMC was in decent shape, usually cars that do not run all that well spend a lot of time sitting or waiting for repairs. The AMC fits that class of car, the aluminum block engine was crap from day one.
Up next week are a 67 Beetle with an OEM Sapphire IV radio, a gas heater and a few other goodies worth while stripping off, then we have a mid 40's Dodge 1/2 ton with butterfly type hood, Ram insignia and Job Ready emblems on each front fender. Sorry no pictures, just came across this truck this afternoon.
Then I have this mid 40's Chevrolet with mint bumpers, grill and complete instrumentation - no radio.d
If your dead set on saving information from old Vin plates, I might suggest that you obtain a rubbing of them.
Research gravestone or tombstone rubbing. This way everyone stays on the right side of the law.

Well I certainly don't want to get anyone in trouble! When I go to junkyards I don't ever remove the VIN from the cars, I just write it down and put them all in a huge Excel database I have. I also do a lot of work on www.findagrave.com so I know about rubbings as well. I've actually done a few on old headstones as some are quite hard to read.
Are you trying to sell these old cars before you mash them? I find it hard to believe that people aren't restoring these kinds of cars up there. I know down here in Georgia people need original parts and if a car is too far gone to restore, they are picked clean before being scrapped. I have a feeling you could make some good money selling parts. It seems like you are quite busy and wouldn't have time to part them out extensively but maybe selling the whole thing as a parts car would be worth your while. For me personally, I'd take a hit on the price even if I could get more scrapping an old car just to see it being used. These old cars aren't going to last forever, especially when they are being crushed so quickly.
Went and picked up my money from the Saturday car haul, 10 cars $2260.00 Canadian.
Scrap prices dropping almost daily so I'm going to park the truck over the winter and see what spring brings for prices. The yard owner thinks by February things will turn around for his sake I hope he is right. As for me I couldn't care one way or other, the crane truck has already come in handy around my yard.
Wish you all the best.
cars at my yard are still fetching $260 a ton whole. $195 ton stripped.
It must have been awhile since you hauled in a scrap car, the best price in the U.S. is form Simon Metals in Tacoma Washington todays price is $180.00 USD
Simon Metals, Tacoma Telephone 1-800-572-8464 or 1-253-272-8464
Mandak in Winnipeg Telephone 1-800-665-0445 or 1-204-482-0445 is paying $120.00 Canadian
1.00 CAD = 0.986194 USD
I would like to know the telephone number of any yard paying more than Simon Metals.
Thanks for your reply Kris Kringle, made a call to Richmond Steel in Vancouver B.C. their paying $$160.00 a ton for cars.
Phone: 604-324-4656 Toll Free: 800-354-6766
It would appear that our Canadian yards have been taken over by the Mafia, there's not one yard in Canada to beat the price your getting. Plus your American dollar is worth a bit more than mine, so this even makes it worse on my end.
Paying $1.27 a liter for diesel, roughly 4 liters to your American gallon.
