That sucks! You missed out there!
I just had mine replaced. The plumber wanted to charge me a $20 removal fee to take the old one. I told him to leave it and I will scrap it. He quickly backed tracked and offered me $25 off the bid if he could have it. I let him because I don't like dealing with ferrous metals, but it kind of left me a little bitter about how quickly he was willing to disregard his "removal fee"
Its called get them when you can. Most of the time they ask for a removal fee because they can. People pay it because they dont want it sitting in front of there house. When we all know it wont sit there more then an hour.
This seems too obvious, but do your parents KNOW you're in the scrap business?
He probably charges the $20 removal fee, then takes it to a mate, who scraps it (hence his fee, it does cost him).
Then his mate scraps it & gives him a percentage back.
At loosing his $20 fee, hes now relying on the percentage to make a few bucks, same as you.
90% of people arn't going to think of scrapping it, just what its gonna cost them to get rid of it, even thinking about the problem gonna cost them more than $20.
