Can relate to most but I'm all about the not being able to hear so just nod or smile. Too much loud music and power tools over the years. My wife will ask what someone said and I will say IDK, and she'll say, but you nodded...that leads to the shoulder shrug then.
The wife thinks I need a hearing aide, I tell her I can hear just fine you just have to speak over the constant ringing.
