I think a lot of it is generational. It's the music that you came up trough with ? I get sentimental about the good ole days of rock n roll cause there are so many memories attached to the music. An oldie comes on the radio and it's like a blast wave from the past. Almost makes you heartsick sometimes ;(.
I don't think i could pick out any one group as being the best ever.

AIC has "got it" along with Metallica & Guns n Roses. They came a little after my time though. That was a generation later.
No one mentioned Pink Floyd, Van Halen should also be mentioned. Rolling Stones. Aerosmith is one of my personal favorites. Genesis, Dire Straits, The Eagles.... And you can't leave out solo artists,, Clapton, Billy Joel, Elton John. Too many to name,....
But in the end, the Beatles are the band that led the whole rock and roll revolution.
Trying to pick the best band is like trying to name the best ice cream flavor.
Some group of people somewhere will always ***** an moan about whatever is considered #1.
I remember seeing a list of top 100 guitarists. The comment section an attached forum were filled with people disagreeing an whining.
I like my old music. I don't mess around much with today's music. Some I do, but the ones I do are a throwback to the old days.
Thankfully with the likes of Pandora, Amazon Music, an other services...I'm no longer held hostage by the radio.
I guess I'ma sucker for the days when you had to have skill, talent, an the ability to actually sing or play an instrument. Nowadays...any idiot with a computer, autotune( or other variation) can be a "singer". ;)
While I disagree with Alice in Chains being the best...I do enjoy their music.
