    Something that made me smile

I was listening to the radio there was a story about how 3 or 4 scrap yard workers in/near Sacramento were arrested for buying scrap from undercover police. The undercover cops went to the yard attempting to sell what they said was "obviously stolen material" to the employees there. They fell for it hook, line & sinker I guess, bypassing the paperwork and purchasing the copper (and other metals i think) from the agents. It just goes to show that at least there is something that's being done about this. To condone thieves and buy stolen stuff is just as bad as stealing it yourself- maybe even worse because in buying this stolen stuff they have created a market for it- with more potential players than i care to think about.

A few years ago a bunch of idiots stole 70 -80 man hole covers in Ottawa. I bet the yards didn't touch those!

Makes us all look bad, and the scrap laws states are trying to get passed are the new laws going to apply to all including the yards? Or just to those who are selling to a yard. Pretty bad when those that are supposed to be helping the industry are looking the other way and buying hot stuff.

Here in KY they now copy your DL and you have to sign a electrosign machine befor they pay you which may seem like a hassle however it has helped curb the theft abit still some idiots are stealing stuff I know to scrap a car/truck you have to either have clear title or notarised reciep of where and whom you bought it from but i dont steal or take with out asking so im not worried just wish the thieves would stop the stupidity

I agree - if you're on the up & up you should have nothing to hide. Hopefully it'll scare off all of them

KY's new law is waiting for the Governor's signature last I heard. "Secondary metal recyclers" will have to register with the state now and pass a background check. Certain convictions will prevent registration.

Several of the most commonly stolen items will have quite a lot of restrictions on their sale - including reporting their sale to the police and payment by check.

It may not stop crooked scrap yard employees like Julie wrote about above. It's hard to stop people who have no respect for the law.

    http://www.ciclt.net/sn/leg/l_detail...12&L_ID=462662

Wasn't sure if the KY law is going to apply to scrappers or just the yards but the bill includes this as one of the definitions of "secondary metal recycler"- " Any recycler, dealer in junk or metals, dealer in secondhand articles, vendor of bottles or tages, or collector of or dealer in articles found in ashes, garbage , or other refuse, whether a dealer, collector or vendor operates an establised place of businesor itinerant business" .

I have noticed the yard I got to I see the same people. Went a yard that sells to the yard I got to and there is some real winner and druggies and I'm sure that's we're all the stolen stuff gets sold. My opinion.

In Sacramento, the yards that are on the up and up require a picture of you and they scan a copy of your drivers license or ID card. They also take a thumb print. If you do not have an established account, you have to wait the three day waiting period for payout on some materials. There are however some yards that pick and choose who they want to buy from legally and who they will take anything from. They get money hungry and think they will not get caught. My advice is if you see something that does not look right or you see some one selling materials that look stolen, report it to the police. People stealing is making it harder for us honest guys and gals trying to make an honest living in these tough times. What I do is keep a list of addresses or locations that I pick up metal items from just in case there are any questions. I am sure if the police wanted to call someone who I picked something up from, they would not mind. Not only would it make you look better in the long run, people would feel more comfortable with you coming to there home knowing your an honest person and not out stealing. I also found a place that will buy TV'S for 3 Cents a pound in Rancho Cordova, they don't pay for other E Waste but they will take it if needed.

This is a globel problem, here in australia the thiefs have made it extremly hard on honest people. One good thing here is that recieving carrys a harsher sentance. The law requires a australian buissiness number and to be registered for gst, which does stop large amounts of stolen metal to be sold.To protect your livelyhood report thieves, these mongrels just make it harder for honest people .If these thieves are not reported it will only get worse, show no mercy.
