    Any tech gurus out there?

I just had big problems with my computer. Got it all straightened out and now have a new pain in the butt. When I am surfing around, if I click on the arrow for the drop down menu of the pages I can go forward or backwards to, I see a bunch of "static.ak.facebook.com" crap. I am not on facebook, and going through the scrap metal forum from a fresh window, but as I navigate through the threads, these things become prevalent in that drop down menu.

I am sure it is some form of malware. I did a search, but only found something similar from about four years ago.

I am running AVG and just did a scan and it turned up nothing.

Any hints or tips on this?

    Thanks in advance.

I only have that happen when im on pages that stay logged into facebook. Try signing out of facebook completely and see if it still does it.

if you suspect malware try malwarebytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free You don't need the PRO upgrade, the free one will check it and remove any.
You'll need to follow a series of steps though in order to completely remove any. 1st is download and install it, then open it and update it. 2nd is to close all windows and computer connections to the internet, turn OFF system restore (right click "my computer", left click properties, restore tab, uncheck the system restore box and wait until it's stopped) then restart into safe mode (F8 as it's beginning to reboot) and run a full malwarebytes scan in safe mode, deleting anything it finds (afterwards is also a good time to run a defrag on your drive, but there are better defraggers than the native windows, which might take seemingly forever). Then restart into regular mode, turning your system restore on soon as it gets up and running, before you venture back online. IF any of these options are hidden or closed to you, it could be a virus. If not, and it doesn't find anything, it could just be something you've never noticed before?

It's not malware or a virus. It's a link to the small Facebook logo. Put in the address bar and you can see it - just a simple image on the page in the top left corner of the screen. It's more of a pain in the butt than anything else. I haven't found a way to block it either.

Since making the switch over to Ubuntu 5 years ago I have reclaimed 12 hours of my life each month no longer spent chasing phantoms.

It comes from the facebook tracking on this site or any site that uses facebook connect. that link is simply to facebook's photo hosting page. Solution is firefox, with noscript and donottrack add ons. Poof, it's gone.

If your use firefox, download adblockplus
    http://adblockplus.org/en/
It strips out advertising from most pages and also seems to speed up downloads. Every now and then I need to use IE and I'm always amazed at the stuff that I no longer see.

I use Firefox also and cannot believe how much faster it is and have not had any blue screens in over two years.

I use AdBlockPlus and it works wonders, especially on sites that are ate up with over bloated advertisements. I have it disabled for SMF, about the only place I've done that, but since I can't afford a membership, at least that helps in a small way to pay my use of the site. I've also found the ads here not to be extreme, and they don't cripple the page loads on slow connections. Not only that I've found most are interesting enough to click on as they are largely about tools related to scrapping
