Can somebody explain?

What does the phrase "Just saying" mean or imply? This may seem trivial but I'm seeing it used more lately. I've studied the contexts in which it's used and it seems to mean either:



1. "That's my opinion. If you disagree, don't say so. No further discussion on the subject is wanted."

or

2. "I don't really know what I'm talking about but want to say something anyway." In this case followup, contradictory responses would seem to be welcome.

When someone writes "just saying", I never really know how to take it. Is it just me or are others wondering the same thing?

To me it means to drop a clue or a fact into the discussion without offering an opinion.

So, it'd be more like #1, but a fact rather than an opinion?

language is arbitrary... yet this is one of my favorite subjects.

i tend to use "just sayin" when the point is obvious to me, and probably obvious to others but i state it anyway because even though it may seem like common sense to most people, others might not have thought about it. so "just sayin" tends to mean "even though its of little relevance or may be an obvious point, im just sayin it anyway"

Correct. For example the other day someone was complaining about their yard scales always weighing on the short side. I posted "Every state has a Weights and Measures Dept....just say'in."

I wasn't telling him what to do, but rather offering him an option that he might not of thought of.

Does that make sense?

I think it is a "throw away phrase" similar to "in my opinion". In my intrepitation of Rustydollar's example I have to say the "just say'in" means "what are you slow?" Now I'm not complaining to Rusty its just my intrepation of the use of that phrase. I suspect it might be because of where/when I grew up.

I also dislike the use of "cut off and cut on" in place of turn on turn off. Mike.

Yes but we cannot always read between the lines.

I usually use it when I might be stating sum ten could be taken the wrong way, more or less no offense intended. Jus saying. . .

I think the phrase is redundant, no matter what the meaning is.......
