You think YOU have issues with what you might get out of the trash...

    News story.

When an Arkansas woman plucked a million-dollar lottery ticket from a convenience-store garbage can last July, she figured another person’s trash was her treasure.

However, Sharon Jones could now be forced to return the prize money of $680,000 after taxes that she and her husband won. A month after she collected her winnings, the clerk at the convenience store in Beebe, Ark., where she got the ticket sued for the money, and a woman claiming she was the original buyer of the ticket joined the lawsuit.
I'm sure everybody here would agree that it's hers, as do I.

What's the betting she told people she found the ticket, and it rolled on from there?
I know lying is wrong, but if the elephant man came in now in a blouse with some make up on, and said, "How do I look?" Would you say, bearing in mind he's depressed and has respiratory problems, would you say, "Go and take that blusher off you mis-shapened elephant tranny?" No. You'd say, "You look nice... John""

Yeah thats pretty shady. They have no way to prove that the ticket is theirs. That's why you sign the back of them because its a way to prove the ticket is yours in case it gets lost or stolen.

If it isn't mine and I keep it, I stole it. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

Yes, I do return money I find (in a store parking lot to the service counter, out and about to the local police station) and I do not keep incorrect change from a store cashier. Yes, they do look at me like I have two heads.

Unfortunately it is not that simple. Many people on this forum make their living by picking up what others have thrown out.

Oh, someone threw out 10 pounds of copper. They must not have known that it is worth over $30. I am going to make sure they get it back.

Look at that beat up brass trombone that sold for over $400. The person who threw it out had no idea of it's worth. I better give all of that money back.

See? It's not that simple. The next time you find a piece of scrap metal, that was intentionally discarded, find the owner and give it back to them. Because after all, it has value and needs to be returned to them.

I am not taking a side on which is right or wrong in this case, but would imagine that the person who "claims" to be the original buyer of the ticket has not a shred of evidence of it's purchase.

My rule of thumb is once it hits the can or the curb, it's trash...and up for grabs.

If I see someone drop something, leave something behind, find a wallet in the middle of the parking lot with a name in it...I'll return it. I won't dip out of a recycling bin. Incorrect change? I'll point it out, because I've been the cashier making min wage behind the counter.

Other than that, I keep my mouth shut. Never let the thrill of the find make you blind.

Metal and money - the same thing in the present economy. If things go belly up though I'd rather have a truck full of useful metal, stoves and appliances than a truck full of paper. Then again you could always use the paper money for fuel...

We were talking about a piece of paper that is not legal tender, but could be redeemed for money. Same as a hunk of copper. It too can be redeemed for money. The only difference in this situation is the amount of money that it can be redeemed for.

That is why I said that it is not that simple. It is an object that was found to be discarded, but worth more than first glance.

So the convience store manager sued her, as she the manager would take all tickets from the trash for 2nd chance stuff? If someone throws something away it is trash! Now the store manager who goes thru the trash wants the prize? And now the person who tossed it as well! This is crazy!!!!

Yes, and it is the supposed person who threw it away. A bandwagon jumper for sure.

In our state the station/convenience store that sells the winning ticket gets 10% and I think the person that sold it gets something from the lottery commission. There's your motive,,,

Yeah, but that's for numbers games, where the computer system knows where and when a given number was sold. I doubt it works the same for scratch-offs, which this one was.

I used to know a guy who drove truck for Pepsi-Cola. He told a story where a driver went on vacation for a week, and a substitute driver covered his route, using his truck. The sub stopped for coffee at McDonalds every day, and at the time, they were having their "Monopoly" game. The sub never bothered to open the game pieces, and when the regular guy got back, they were still there in the truck. He opened them, and found a $10,000 instant winner. And wouldn't share it...

I know this from experience............If you scan a Scratch Off Ticket in one of those readers, it doesn't work. That's what this lady did and didn't ask the cashier to check the ticket. I did this when I knew I won $50 on one and I used one of those "quick scanners" it said sorry not a winner, when I handed the cashier the ticket he punched it in the terminal and wala $50. The lady who trashed the ticket should've had the cashier check the ticket. It's her own fault, the lady that trash picked the ticket gets the money. Bottom line know how to play the game you pick and know if you have a winner before you "scan" it yourself. Sorry to say this but this is just another example of a lazy person not wanting to take 30 seconds to read the description to know if you won or not. It's on the bottom of the ticket Ex. "if you have planet symbol" you win all prizes on ticket or "moneybag symbol" you win that prize. Match numbers, yada yada.........rant over

Went to the store one day and saw an old man (looked homeless) with a bicycle, with a basket on the handle bars, the basket was half full of old lottery tickets and he was looking through them. I started to talk to him and he told me that he would go around all day and pick up old lottery tickets and check for winners. I ask if he ever finds winners. He said he gets 10-15 dollars a day even finds tickets that weren't even scratched off.
