My Vises

I have 3 now on my workbench. The red one I got for free from one of the scrap yards I go to. I'm always nosing around looking in the boxes of stuff they have filled up ready to send out. Well, the one day I saw this vise and asked him if he'd sell it to me. I had no idea if it was even any good. He said it was only worth a couple bucks to him - go ahead and take it ''thanks for your business!'' :) I love it, its stronger to hold transformers when I'm pulling the copper out of them.

The little blue one to the right I use for holding lawn mower blades when I hand sharpen them. The blue one on the left was my original one I used for holding transformers and stuff.

The free one is a Wilton, I don't know how much those cost new but I'm sure they aren't cheap!

I'm trying to find a model number or something on this thing and I haven't found it yet. the jaw is 6 1/2 inches.

Looks like they go for good money on ebay. Even the used ones go for $100 and up. Nice score 'tude!

I use that red Wilton vise at work. It's a beast. I've yet to break it and I abuse it daily. The back part makes a good anvil for pounding on stuff as well. Try it! Wilton is a good, heavy duty brand. We have them throughout our plant. Good score for free too! It beats those Made in China vises. A few hard cranks on those and you'll break the jaws or strip out the torque bolt.

I don't think you need add vice. Looks like threes enough.

My only vice is Miami Vice. On a technical note. I would like some kind of pneaumatic foot operated automatic vice.

a pneumatic foot operated vice. That sounds so dangerous I don't even want to think about it. Imagine getting your finger pinched off in it because it stuck on close or something crazy like that.

Did you re-paint that vise NA or was it in that good of shape when you got it?

money can't buy stuff like that any more, you either gotta get it by luck, good fortune, or... uhmmm...other vises? lol

No, I didn't re-paint it Bear -it came like that! After I took the pics I cleaned it up better and got most of the built up grime off of it. the only part that didnt come off were at the top corners, it looks like whomever had it before me used it to weld maybe? Because it sort of looks like burn marks but I'm just guessing on that. I still cant believe someone scrapped it!!

it could've belonged to a tinkerer, who had it in a shed, that did a little welding and mechanic work. The shed could've been cleaned out by a fortune seeker, who cared nothing for their posterity, and simply tossed it in the pile. This happens more often than we care to know. Vices once were a common home shop tool, and even up into the 70s could be purchased new, very reasonably, through popular outlets such as Sears or Wards, and even small town hardware stores. You can take that thing apart, wire brushing any rust or gunk off of it, and putting dabs of grease where it needs greasing (such as the main shaft threads, and hold down clamp threads, if it rotates, a bit on the rotating table), and it will work as good as new, for a long, long time
