Need Advice From the E-Scrap Experts!

I picked up something today that I know virtually nothing about. It is a tape backup system, described as an Adic Scalar 100 AIT-3 tape library with 2 drives. A big heavy sucker.
The guy said it was in good working condition. It included all cords, paperwork and rack mount. Holds 80 AIT-Tapes for online storage. (8-TB).

A quick look on ebay showed various other models ranging anywhere from $500 to $5000. The guy I got it from said they paid $23,000 in 2005. He tried to sell it and couldn't, he thought about parting it out himself but decided not to. So he was giving it away and I was able to nab it. I am pretty sure parting it out will be my best option, but I wanted to get some advice from the experts here as I am not sure what will have the most value above scrap. Any ideas?

i've got a biggish one too

you said two drives? ok, take a look at the drives, see if you can easily get them out of there. Then google the numbers from the drives. They will be your easiest sell, easiest ship, and the rest just scrap

Anything other then the drives worth saving for more than scrap Mike?

I scrapped the whole thing...It was a Sun tape drive and it was hard to get apart and I tore it up while dismantling......Mabye you'll have better luck.

8TB is nothing now. The last backup solution i put in for a customer was 17TB and only cost them 5 grand.

Hell the cloud storage backup solution i developed for my works cloud is 76TB and it's cost was about 22 Grand.

That is what I figured, which is why I didn't figure selling it outright was a legitimate option...since it was new in 2005, in computer years that is ancient technology :)

i tried selling 4 of them on ebay. no buyers even at just over scrap value.
i ended up tearing apart all 4 of them when they didnt sell.

there were some nice cast AL bodies on them, and some decently sized motors (for drive moters that is)

So, I spent a little over an hour tearing the thing down...The two drives turned out to be Sony SDX-700C SCSI drives, and a quick look online shows pricing anywhere from $129 - $250. It was surprisingly easy to tear down, except for a couple of the motors were in deep...probably should have just left them. Got a fair amount of aluminum and a few boards and motors. Could have been worse!

cool! good luck on selling them. You'd be surprised how many will still use that "ancient technology". It's been a couple years, but last I checked, SCSI was still right along side the new drives for speed. You might even try listing a motor or two out of it, or the control panel, it's iffy, but who knows. One 9.95 sale will pay for the rest of em. I haven't used ebay for a while either, but once found ten day listings best for oddball stuff, or if I had a number of the same oddball item, I'd list only one for ten days(as if it's the only one in the whole wide world), and get a good idea for a buy it now price. Or like your two drives, list only one for ten days (i always started ten days on friday afternoons, getting a full week + two weekends), then once it closes, kindly inform the highest bidder you have two, and offer him both, if he turns it down, offer it to the next highest bidder ; )
