In over my head?

Hi guys, it has been awhile since I've posted but I still lurk daily! :o

I'm posting because I could use some advice. I may have the opportunity to make an offer on a 1977 Grove RT58 Rough Terrain Crane. Google showed the approximate dimensions and it weighs (depending on the site you visit) 28,000 - 38,000 lbs. This is way more than I normally deal with. As usual it is kind of a right now deal. It doesn't run but I'm thinking even selling parts could be profitable and worse case scenario I could always scrap it. My questions are has anyone dealt with something that big? How in the world would I get it? Would I have to hire a semi? And then it doesn't run so how do I get it on the trailer? Wow so many questions!! I'm definitely not in Kansas anymore lol! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

woah! good luck with that! Might start calling heavy equipment repair, larger construction company shops etc looking for a lead on it.

You would have to get a semi to get that for you so fit your costs accordingly. If you get it super cheap I would scrap it out and send it direct to the scrap yard. Or you would have it dropped off at your yard now you would need to take it apart and see if you can fix it if not then you would have to scrap it and that would take some time. Torch, nuts and bolts, etc woudl take up most of your time. If you get a trailer there are some that can pull it onto their trailer and haul it away jsut call some towing companies around they can explain it better I have used them in the in the past and they work great.

The cool thing about industrial equipment the engines all use an S.A.E. bell-housing, numbered 1.2 ans 3's which makes swapping in off brand engines a snap as long as the horse power is the same as the one being replaced.

Your crane more than likely has a Detroit diesel, these engines are easy to find cheap, easy to work on with reasonably priced overhaul kits.

Most scrap yards only pay
2-4 cents a lb cuz there alot of hours to tear down

Your gonna need a lowboy trailer to haul it, and there not cheap or possibly get it towed by tow rig that tows semis.

Update: so he wanted too much to make it worth my while. Thank you for the ideas! I'm definitely going to research this so I'm ready for next time.
