new spair time scrapper
Hi my name is Josh I'm a union worker who us currently laid off. In my free time I would like to get more into scraping metals. I'm firmiliar with diffrent types of metals and what there worth, however I don't always know where to find thees metals or weather there worth taking apart or "gutting things" to seperate things like copper or brass or cast or aluminum. Right now I have a washer and 2 60 gallon hot water heaters. What is the best or most cost effective way to scrap Therese. Is it worth taking apart? Or scraping whole? Should I be looking at Bringing this kind of stuff to a scrap yard? Or is there other buisnesses who will buy this sorta stuff sucjh an appliance repair place or something in that area of work. Any help or impute is appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Breaking down items is something I do a lot. There is an entire section on how to break things down which include opinions on wether or not it makes sense to do so. Often it depends on you and what your time is worth. Nothing will take the place of personal experience to educate youself, so break everything down until you know what makes you the most money.
I highly recommend reading as many of the old threads as you can. Also at the bottom of each thread there are threads with related subjects. Best of luck, Mike.

The washing machine of course has a decent sized electric motor which can be easily removed, then you can decide to take apart the motor or leave it whole (I hate taking motors apart). The water heaters I've encountered sometimes have copper and/or brass bits attached to them on the outside, the rest is pretty much steel, as is the rest of the washing machine.

If there gas water heaters, the regulator is usually aluminum.some copper on the thermo coupling. usually some brass fittings.

It's all like miked said yep, grab some tools and give it a go, what will seem to be wasted time now, will become a great education in the future
