I've seen a lot of old automotive systems go cheap because they are designed for R-12 which is used very little. One that uses 134 has a little more value, but I can pick those up for 50-100.00 so it would be right in line with a used price.
HVAC systems do hold their value a little better. If it can handle new refrigerant 410 (higher pressure) it would be worth 100+ depending on the model. If it can only handle R22 it still has value but the market is limited. In that case, your again, right in line with a piece of used equipment 50-100.00. I personally own 3 recovery systems, I have 1 setup that I only use on R-22, one for 134, and my newer system I use on 410. You don't want to mix refrigerants and it's just more simple to have 3 setups and sets of gauges, but this is because after a few years you end up with an excess of equipment, I could get by with just 1 set.
If you are planning on buying one for scrap, I think you would be real disappointed at 50.00. There is some copper, motor, wire, but nothing that would most likely get you above 50.00.
Some great points there Phantoms, one which I don't recall ever seeing addressed, although it may be just too obvious to mention most times?
I'm referring to automotive systems and their reclamation. How many go across the scales without having been taken care of? I've never seen anybody mention it in discussions of scrapping vehicles

1956, there are 3 types of machines. The basic recovery machine, the recycling machine (does a slight amount of cleaning) and true reclaiming machines. If the machine can't return the refrigerant to virgin specs (meeting ARI 700 standards) then it's not a true reclaiming machine.
Considering the one your talking about is in an auto shop of a school I would assume it's for cars.
