If you're ever having trouble with star bits, I find that precision flat heads work just as well.
The only stars that don't work with flat heads are the ones with the pretruding piece in the center of the star.

Just to let you know I was at Home Depot 2 days ago picking up so stuff and saw small Torx driver set it was around $6. The smallest I had was T5 and I have some laptop drives that the T5 was to big?? So I am hopping the T4 fits.Quote:

The star heads with the little nub in the center, You can pop that nub off with a flat head and a hammer.
I just went to autozone and bought a cheap set of the security star bits for 7.99. Was cheaper then my local Homedepot, and my local Ace and Lowes don't carry the security ones. Makes getting into sat/cable boxes so much easier...!

This is what I use. 9.00 at harbor freight, can't beat it. It has Hex, Hollow Hex, Pozi, Torx, Hollow-tip Torx, Square, Spline Fasteners, Phillips And Slotted.

While they aren't high grade like a craftsman set would be, I lose the tips before they break (the wife and kids often like to help out). I often buy specialty tools from HF. If I need a tool that I don't used every day it's a great place to find a cheap tool but keep in mind you get what you pay for.
I buy most of my tools from HF. The problem with a set like the one in the post above (whitch I have one) is that I only use 2 or 3 bits and the rest just sit in the case. Another problem I have with HF torx pits is if you don't seat the bit in the screw right the tip of the bit will brake off. Like the post above says "you get what you pay for".
If you round the edges off on the end of the bit, put it to the grinder.Quote:

Same here, star bits work great but when dealing with Philips I gotta press down real hard to prevent stripping. I almost never get to use a micro phillips bit in a cordless because it'll strip on me everytime!
when you insert the bit make sure it is seated then twist counter clockwise just a smidge on the drill before you pull the trigger. I will work like clockwork most of the time
