I've got a lead on some Dell servers (6850's and a couple 2850's) missing hard drives and wanted to know what a reasonable offer would be per pound. Searched thru the forum and found a couple people buying them for around .40 per pound with HD's included. Any expertise would be appreciated, as this would be my first server buy. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help
Make sure those buy prices are current. Servers are tough to buy (my experience)
If you have never broken down servers, .40 per pound could loose you money really fast. Keep in mind that they can weigh 80-100lbs or more, and most of that is steel. I pay less for servers than I do for computers, unless they are small 1U blade servers. On the other hand, they sometimes have clean copper heat sinks that can be 1-2 lbs each, and have lots of RAM. I can tell you flat out that the 2850's are not a good buy at .40 per pound. I am not very familiar with the 6850 but I think those are either a 2U or 4U size and might have more goodies inside.
I prefer to buy them by the piece at $10 for a 1U and ad $5 for each U size after that.
hard drives are minor unless you try to resell them. the scrap value will depend on their past use. there will be some e bay parts but you have to have them up when some one is looking for that particular part.
scrap value can be from $40 to about $70, but they are an easy break down.
I have broken down over 1000 servers this year so far. the average scrap value has been .54. that includes u1 to sun rollers all brands.

P.S. wish to he88 I could buy them for $5 or $10. but reality shows, armatures, and the foreign markets are killing the market for scrap. just my .02

I would say 25c per lb is more than reasonable and fair. With or without hard drives. Most severs I have seen are 100 lbs and the boards weigh like 3-4 lbs.
So if you do the math. 100 lbs at 25c a lb. is 25 dollars. Then the board 3-4 lbs is $16 dollars to $20 figuring $4 per lb for dual socket boards. Then 90 lbs of shred at 10c is 10.00. So right now you broke even and made a couple dollars. Now you got the memory and power supplies and etc.
So a profit albeit a small one at 25c per lb. And of course the solid #2 copper heatsinks if your lazy and dont have time to clean them to make them #1 price.
So my personal average I would say $40 a server. But then you also got to look at the big picture.
The power supplies can go for $20 and up on EvilBay! The hard drive caddies are can go for #10, even the dummy bay. And the big ticket is the tape drive. I had a tape drive that still sells for 1200 new at NewEgg. I ended selling it for $300.00 to a refurbisher/ reseller on EvilBay, because I needed money now, not a month from now when someone decided they needed a fancy dancy tape drive lol.
So to sum it up. I would say 25c lb and stick with it. Maybe as high as 30c a lb if they got the drives and you can resell them without destroying them.
