Have a little Quandary need sugestions ..

My son went on a rather decent size E pick up today and in the process kind of got blind sided Story to just ahead.

My son took a 45 min ride south of us for a rather large pick but once there it turned out to be a total mess...When he arrived at the State Reps office in the next county over to pick up some computers , ups batteries and big money toner cartages along with some odds and ends he gets asked to go se the Rep he has some more stuff also ...Well he dose too..after a walk to the back parking lot there sits 9 skid stacked full of guess what?...A bunch of Tv's and old monitors...As the story goes he put on a electronics drive last month and the company that was helping loaded all the good stuff up and hasn't been back since ..lol... They keep dodging his every call(Hmmmm I wonder why ) ..To shorten this up a little he now asked if we would like to take this mess off his hands ASAP in exchange for a us being the sole recycler in his county to collet E waste.. Now what?

I assume if you go for it you need to register as a legit company .Can you make a profit cause thats the bottom line .

No.1- is the ewaste all free?
No.2- Do you have an outlet to get rid of crt glass and plastics ?
No.3- Do you have the space to deal with it all?
If the answer is yes then I think you should jump all over it. I know there may be other factors to consider like proper vehicles, forming an LLC or Corp, liability insurance etc, but if you can handle what he has now and he can wait till you get your logistics set up then I think you are looking at a great opportunity.

All is covered but the CRT's.. Now that is a work in progress.. I might have it worked out with a processor they will pick them up for free but the catch is there has to be a semi load (26 gaylords ). Now theres where the problem comes in.. Under my DEP permit all crt's must be stored under roof ..Now I would be short on space..

Hey PAScrapPappy,

Would the processor consider dropping a trailer for you to allow you time (and give you extra space) to process those crt/tv's/whatever else is there?
This will allow you to keep stuff "under cover".
I don't know if this would work in your situation but just my thoughts

If you were trying to get this account and you had to take him out for a steak dinner you would do it.
This is better than wining and dining a client.

I would either get a storage trailer or build a cheap shed. "Under cover" doesn't need to be fancy; just prevent potential leaching.

I would do it ,''keeping under cover'' ,asks for some creative thinking and is doable.

Heck put a piece of plywood on 4 2x4s theres ur roof

I would go after the company that he was working with that took all the good stuff and left the crumbs. Hopefully he had some kind of contract with the company. At the very least I would contact the BBB and file a complaint.

I think I know exactly where this is, because I've driven by the collection site and was surprised to see the TVs weren't taken anywhere yet. Those CRTs have been rained on so many times a roof over them wouldn't help now! I hope you get the contract.

The "roof requirement" isn't for their sakes. It's an EPA requirement to prevent ground contamination with the lead in them.

Funny how the DEP makes the small guy follow requirements but the county where he may be getting them from has them sitting put on the rain for God knows how long.

Well if you have a goodwill in your area then the crts are no problem...strip them and put the cover back on and take them to be recycled through their program. They have to take them and they get paid to take them.

If you really need temp storage rent a storage unit and take the cost out of your profit while you process the crts for the steel and copper to pay for the unit.

Ok taking the leap here and Having a 20x 80 lean-to added to the shop... I never figured id run out of space with a 40x80..The catcher is it has to have a concrete floor also DEP regulations But Ill look on the bright side at least I'll have the space and won't have to worry any more... And my son was worried about how he was going to spend his money from all the cell phones we hauled home from up north. PROBLEM SOLVED!! ..

I have heard it takes money to make money, great idea to make your facility bigger.

Goodwill (By me now anyways) has a sign on their doors they no longer take tvs so the OP might have to deal with paying to get rid of the tv's at least at a local waste facility. Just another heads up to look into.

that the reason they got hosed is because of the fee associated with the CRT disposal. Maybe he'll offer to pay you to take them
unsightly things away AND sign a contract with you?

Best buy has a monitor recycle programand tthey y ake some tvs I believe.

On the goodwill thing...ask if they are not taking working tvs or are not taking the ones for the recycle program....and I would pull the latest rules for their recycle program off their website and take with me....sometimes that reminds someone that might be "mistaken" on the terms of their program. Do e that before and won on several things.

That might work. I mean, the guy has to probably know why all those monitors are still sitting there. But if the OP is upfront and honest right from the get go the guy might be appreciative and like how the OP handles things.
