Wondering about metal scraps from old houses

HI I'm Peter, and I'm new to the site.

I was wondering how do you go about dismantling any metals found in old homes.

Is there a way to properly get them?

First and most important thing is to have permission to remove things from the house.

When I helped tear down my fathers home built in the 1800's it was relatively simple. We started on one side of the house, would take out that part of the ceiling, pull any wire, then tear down sockets, then drywall and pull the wire. Eventually it was just the floor, and again we went from one side to the other tearing it out, and began the gut out the plumbing underneath us. Relatively simple, however if you weren't tearing down the house I could see it being a little more of a hassle. Remember that these homes are built with really thick pieces of wood, nothing too modern.

i love pulling the trim away from old windows to find 2 or 3 old cut off window weights down inside there.and you gota love those big slabs of steel from the old stone/brick fireplaces

my first load of scrap was 4 copper pipes out of a house i was doing a demo on, my second load was the next day and the rest is history :) , i didn't know anything, they sorted thru my stuff i tried to pay attention, but as stated above if you don't have permission stay away

Your looking at some time in jail/prison if you don't obtain proper permission. Little detective work can get you there.

cut the soldered joints off the copper pipe, those go as #2 copper the rest goes as #1
