Stainless Beer Kegs

So I am getting 6 standard sized stainless kegs. Someone told me they might be worth more selling them back to a store. Anyone have any ideas?

Also I wasn't sure how to ask this. But I got this metal block that was being used as a weight for the back of a truck for when its icy out. About 12x18 inches. It is heavy! Maybe 100 lbs. Feels like lead. But its magnetic with a bit of surface rust. Is this Iron or lead covered in steel? I don't know what to think. Seems real heavy to be steel.

If you do not have a sales receipt from the company that actually owns the beer kegs, if that is what they are, and try to sell them back to them, depending on where you live you could be charged with receiving stolen property.

What type of kegs are they? Beer kegs with the fittings on top for a tap? Or are they the cylinders used for soda syrup? Or are they the kegs sold with beer making kits?

Be careful dealing with your kegs. You might want to check out the laws governing the sales of your kegs before you attempt to do anything with them.

So far as your metal block is concerned, it sounds like iron or steel. I know of no application where anyone would need to plate iron on lead, and not sure that's even possible. That would be more likely melting lead into an iron box because iron melts at a far higher temp than lead which melts at a very low temp. In that case you would see welding around the edges as well. But if it's one uniform block, then that probably means it was caste all at one time. If there is very little rust, that might mean it's more steel, if there is a lot of rust, probably iron. But remember also, steel is iron with carbon.

And I thought most beer kegs were aluminum,,, silly me.

Most kegs are aluminum as far as I know.

And all the scrap yards in my area won't purchase commercial kegs because they belong to I believe the beer company so I'd be weary of scrapping them.

Sell the kegs back to where they came from- most yards dont want them. That block may be nickel. :&

Huh? These are your standard 15.5 gallon beer keg that you would tap. It looks like stainless. I could be wrong. But I don't see what the big deal is. The guy who has them says he bought them at a store where they sell kegs to brew your own beer. And was like 10+ years ago. He said guys are always buying and selling and trading kegs to use for their beer making... Legally

And the metal block does have welds around it in some places. Any surefire way to tell what it is? Thanks

You'll forgive people saying it may be illegal cause it lot of places..folks steal them or keep them, an try an resell them. It's called CYA..Cover your Ass. Always double check, there's a saying that goes with assuming. Good you know their legal.

I'd rather double check an err on the side of caution then catch a case an feed the system.

Kegs are Stainless Steel, otherwise, if they were Aluminum they would "flavor" the beer.

What a lot of people used to do is get a keg of bear, pay the deposit but never return the keg because the scrap value was worth more than the deposit left on the keg.

Also, people cut them in half and use them for BBQs, deep fryers for turkeys and even gas tanks for drag cars. Because they are made out of Stainless Steel, there are many things they can be used for.

Due to new laws, even if they are old ones, the yard you use might not buy them because they don't know the difference. All they know is that its illegal to buy them from people unless they have a receipt.

There are some disturbers of secondhand kegs, The name of the brewery will be mechanically stamped out not ground off or distorted in a way that looks second rate.

If they have a brewers name on them they belong to that brewer. unless the brewer in no longer in business.

Just because the brew-store sells kegs dose not mean they do it legally. I know of one around me that you can buy everything to make your keggel and your mash tun and you can get the keg from them too.

You guys were right. I called 2 yards out here (to cover my ass) and they both said "no we cant take kegs". So I am going to sell them on cl. probably make more that way anyhow.

And that heavy metal block. I found a stamp on it that said 100 lb steel plate. They scrapped it as mixed iron!!! Oh well. Thanks for the tips guys.
