House demo & regulations

I picked up a project that consisted of removing a 500 gal fuel oil tank with 30 gallons of fuel (that I will use for my home )
a steam oil burner with a touch of asbestos 600 lb as short , I picked up some tin mix metals to the tune of 500 lb
AL of around 30 pounds
and #1 romex that fills a 25 gallon pail some brass some copper .
I took care of the situation and house was then demoed .
I am to pay owner 20% cut .

So the question all said and done - - If a scrapper ( like Me ) did not remove the boiler and tank would the demo crew not of proceed I feel they would not of put boiler in dumpster . and would not of dare moved oil tank for all the ramification associated with a oil spill .
This is my second oil tank and I see in 2 years - rules have changed I have to cut a round or square hole in tank of around 12 inches so yard men can see any major sludge . I also have to rinse tank with water .

This whole project seems like too much work for a 20% cut. At this point I feel the owner is way ahead as I think done by the law this is a $1200 project cost for him.
I will add he has a LLC home rental company that this home is a part of . So wile I am in gypsy mode doing this,
his company is by the books
I sensed his urgency as he ask if I can handle the oil tank.

I will give him his cut after I discussed with him some realities,( I feel he will let it slide ) But for the future I feel this service of oil tank is not gonna be free in the future


Yes the pick up truck allowed me to just do a project I would of not taken on with the mini van.

Go back to him after it is all said and done and talk price and show him some info. Maybe he can budge.

Copperhead...I've been in the demolition business for a while and have had to deal with many oil tanks. Most of them are heating oil or diesel and the like and I can use the fuel myself. Others like hydraulic lift tanks are a different story. I have to transport them to an oil reclamation site and transfer the oil with an EPA guy watching. Also, you have to watch out with asbestos as there are so many regulations on it. Some yards will probably take the burner with it still attached, but others might turn you in to the EPA. I think you could work a better deal with homeowners/rental companies and get paid for your service. You might just have to eat this one since the deal has been struck, but he may give in a little for you.

having to deal with rinsing and then getting rid of that now funky water that you rinsed with is an environmental nightmare.

I do around 15% with the deal i have going. The difference being i go through the guys that own the demo crew and they offer my service for me to the clients and have the paperwork needed already so when the deal is made it's good to go. In this case i am paying for convenience there is no leg work on my end to get the job. Any contractor should make a little off there subs that's just business
a hand pump and a few 55 gallon drums will be a valuable set of tools if you plan on keeping these jobs up.

Yes next time I'll be better prepared . Since the truck bed had the stink on it along with the bumpers I took truck to a self service wash station did a half hearted rinse of tank
and rinsed my truck the best i could . Then i got so busy I had to use truck with oil slime on ply wood on metal bed (what a smell) finally today I was able to really clean truck bed and such .
If I ever do this again I will have to handle this completely different as obviously I had some spillage . Also it's not like these tanks are all that heavy for there size about 400 and change pounds. But sure fuel oil must be close to $4 so that makes up for a lot.

Any day you can learn something is a good day for sure.

In South Carolina, the regulations are a lot easier to slide by, but I still would not remove an oil tank for free. Too much work for too little$.

wait until you get one 3/4 full all you hear in your mind is payday $$$
I like to add Mitco srt-2+ to any fuel dumped into my tank that i get this way helps with the sludge and freezing never know how long it's been sitting in that tank.

Take the gravy work, and leave the other work for someone else. This guy is a landlord, hes looking for someone hungry to do it for nothing.
