Potential E-Waste Recycler in San Diego
Hi! My name is Dave and I live in San Diego. I just started scrapping metal recently when dealing with my grandfather's estate. He was a contractor and had piles of metal accumulated around his yard. I'm looking for some extra income at the moment, and I'm considering getting into e-waste recycling. I've heard that decent money can be made piecing out computers. My friends and I have several used computers and other electronics that I'd like to try to part out. Anyone on here do this? I have a few questions I'd like to figure out, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Most importantly: Which components are worth reselling and which are only worth scrapping?
I'm also interested in knowing how to properly dispose of e-waste haz mats like CRTs.
And I've heard that HDDs are worth more functional than as scrap. Does anyone know how to cheaply, efficiently wipe drives?
I know that offers to buy/sell are only allowed in certain forums, but I'm still in the info-gathering phase at this point. If I can make a decent buck doing this, I'll start doing it a lot more. As I said, any info is greatly appreciated. Also, if you think these questions would be bettered answered somewhere other than 'Introduce Yourself', let me know. Thanks!

Well welcome to the forum from the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Your questions have been asked and answered just a few times. What you want to do is get yourself a cold beverage, a comfortable seat and start reading all the old posts, there is soooo much knowledge here that your head will spin. Start out reading a few hours each night and soon you will be able to consider yourself an expert in the field. Not intending to sound rude in any way. We all learned by reading, no one handed us our information. Good luck, there is plenty of money to be made from other people's waste, you just have to take it slow until you find your niche. Happy scrapping.
