Don't turn it down!

This may be a given, but it is a philosophy I live by in this business. A guy I know came and dropped off an old tonneau cover from his truck (as you may know, you tell people you scrap, they sometimes claim you as their new personal dump) and I thought "great.....now i have to get rid of this thing....not much metal here......." turns out, the box that the cover rolled up into was just covered in a thin plastic layer, underneath.....aluminum! i tore open the fabric and again, aluminum ribs, and lots of them. Sure got some envious looks from the competition at the yard that week:) moral of the story, have an open mind, and stay curious :)

This reminds me of when i was offered a stack of cubicle dividers. Figured i could knock the steel off and use the particle board insides for my garage. Boy was i wrong, when i was unloading them i noticed there were hollow :-l and wrote it off as a loss but was gonna recoup some of it from the steel and burn the rest in a nice bonfire. After i pulled the first piece of "steel" it turned out to be aluminum :winner: Long story short what was supposed to be some particle board i could use and about 300 pounds of steel turned into a nice bonfire and $200 worth of extruded aluminum so i was happy. So now i never turn stuff like that down it may open the door up to bigger and better things

Another reason to not turn anything down is once you do people will forget about you and look for someone else to dump stuff on. Sometimes that may be good but it can come back to bite you in the behind if they ever have some really good stuff to get rid of. If they asked you once before if you wanted a particular item and you said no they will probably look for someone else when they have the good stuff to get rid of.
