Taking apart different electronics and finding some screws have odd heads. Like one that looks like a torx but on the outside of the head instead in of the center. Then some screws that have a raise place in the center. Like a security screw . What to tell the local Fastenal people or where to find thanks . If it is posted
some where on here I did not find .
Use a 12 point socket on the ones that look like an inverted torx, take an old or cheap regular screwdriver and file out the middle for the other ones.
A hammer is best tool...I have found that it can get past all types of security....works on locks on computer/server cases as well.
Also someone here on the forum had said they used an ax an that worked good for them but for me..a hammer =)
Grinder also works well.

I second spin in the HF set.
you want a 50 piece or whatever security set form Harbor Freight....they have the torx ones AND the torx with the raised center (what you have) along with quite a few others....the only one I have not found a set for is cable DVR's...the require a very small star SOCKET, not a bit....those I just take the hammer and chisel to.
Don't spend a fortune on them, just grab a cheap set at Harbor Freight and get on with it....if something happens, pick up another set cheaply. :)
My cheap set I don't usually break, I just lose them in the carpet then the sweeper gets them.
I have used apex fastener tips ever since I started working on aircraft in 1979. I mentioned this company in another post about fastener bits. Like I said then they are probably the most expensive. They are a California company and I buy mine direct from the manufacturer. Grainger is also a distributor. I have found lots of the other companies bits just don't hold up to regular use. They recently came out with new catalogs in pdf formats on line. Even if you use sombody elses bit, go check out the fastener and bit catalog, it's good info about the various types of fasteners and the correct tools to remove them. Apex Tool Group this is the web site link and page 8 of the fastener pdf catalog has a pretty good reference for the 18 basic type of fasteners. If it's a fastener this company makes the tools to install and remove them. They are not cheap, but I think the best built for commercial work.

On the cable/dvr boxes with those security ones, I use the hammer an cold chisel. Cheap metal, breaks easy. Would take more time removing it properly. LOL.

I want to make a little update on my earlier post, I was saying to take a look at Apex Tool Groups new catalog. They do have a good catalog with some good information. What I need to correct is they are a distributor located in South Carolina and not the same company I buy from. http://omegatec.com/images/full-logo-100-2.gif This is the manufactor of Apex bits that I have been buying from for years direct from the manufactor. Just want to clear that up two different companies, one a distributor and Omega is the manufacturer. Both companies have good web sites with lots of good info on fasteners and tools. What I like about Apex bits you only have to buy them once!

Check your socket set, I'm lucky enough to have a collection of quite a few small enough ones that will work on those screws - they also work well when taking screws out of the Dish TV eyes.

i know the usual sizes are 3.8mm and 4.5mm out of the security bit set i already had from harbor freight it didnt have one. i got tired of trying pry stuff apart and ended up ordering a set off ebay. some people file out parts of flat head screwdrivers and make their own version.
