Fixing sticky rubber

I guess this question qualifies for this forum since the item is at least part metal. :)

Picked up a supposedly fully functional Canon EOS 5 film camera today. Did not have a chance to test it yet but either way I'll probably try to sell it.

The only issue I found so far is that the plastic/rubber parts around the body where you hold the camera are all sticky which is fairly common I think. Question: is there any way to remove the stickiness without ruining the camera in the process? Even if that leaves the camera's cosmetic look less than perfect it would at least not be as icky to hold in your hand.

If your not worried about looks try some alcohol, goo gone, i have also heard you can replace the grips. Also nevrr tried this but heard using hairspray but it will make it shiny.

Amazing the timeliness of this forum. I just had the same problem today and wondered what in the world to do about it. The grip on the height adjusting handle on my peanut plow somehow turned sticky (possibly the 100 degree weather). I will now try some of the remedies suggested on that.

generally rubbing alcohol will remove most of the "stickiness" and shouldn't ruin the grips....just start in a small area and see how it goes...if it works well then do the rest.

The trick I use for "sticky; I don't care how it looks" is to add dirt. Sticky tape on a baseball bat? Rub dirt on it. Sticky gum on my shoe? Rub it in sand until all the sticky is stuck. Perhaps powder it until the sticky is gone?

Not as gross as it sounds...ever wonder how they get pitch out of wood chips when they make paper? Its sticky as h*ll and makes a big mess. And doesn't cook up with the rest of the wood in the chemicals they use. So they add talc powder to "grab" the stickies and make the stickies stickiless. Works like a charm.

That's another idea. I have a five gallon bucket of talc and it won't grit up the handle like regular dirt (my usual cure for sticky also).

For using sand..I'll gladly send you all you can handle.
