You should always make what your time is worth.
What your time is worth is a value you put upon yourself.
You should charge whatever you have to charge to earn what your time is worth at the end of the day.
Only when the scrap pays at least what your time is worth, should you do a free removal.

Seriously, as long as I'm not on a wild goose chase for it, I'll take it for free. It's case by case. How far am I driving? Was I already going that way? How long will it take to move? Do I need special tools? Do I need to disassemble something?
As my 86 year old father in law says for free take it! But at $.06 a pound cant go far for it even if it free!

Apparently .08/lb is the threshold where I am. I've seen 2 dishwashers at the curb in the last 3 days. Even I didn't pick them up. I did score about 10 lbs of alum soffit yesterday as no one is out hunting right now.
Even though gas is low ($2.59/gal) in my area.. lots of guys are just staying home I guess.
In my area charging to pickup items is out of the question because my city and surrounding cities will pickup bulky items on trash days plus all items could be taken to landfill / recycling stations (no charge). For me this a part time / hobby and if the few other guys I see out in my area don’t want to go out to get it I will. That’s just more in my trailer so volume will help offset the decline in price. I will take a load in on Saturday morning and I'll see what the local price has fallen to.

Over the last 2 years I have sold off almost all my "good" steel.... Now I restock
Due to my work I have to go to many businesses and associations weekly, this is where scrap is gathered for me. I just load my truck while on the clock.
That coupled with the fact I am now the sole alternative to dump fees for all contractors in town ( a lot of these guys) and growing up with most of them is an added bonus;)
Trading and Bartering have been working well for me lately and pose better gains either financially or personally then selling for recycling.

Picked up a load today, 46 mile road trip. Prices drop again. another 0.8 cents a pound. we are now off 29.3 percent from summer prices. I may have to reconsider the longer runs. (6.3 cents for light iron)
We have a 1 ton minimum before we even consider doing anything for free. Alot would depend on how much time and effort it takes to load. Free is out of the question if it involves stairs, elevators, etc...
As admin said what your time is worth. Calculate what you would like to earn an hour and that estimate how long it will take, how much $ u will make. If u want $20 an hour and you pickup a fridge and it takes
The closest certified yard is 35 miles one way. Not worth my time to haul scrap metal. I give it to the local recycling centers. This keeps my taxes down and can sometimes get a good deal on their computers.
I do keep some metal to fill my truck when I do go down with my non-ferrous.
So now steel and other metals are lower. If I go out I hope to find other metals that pay more than steel, but as there prices are falling as well... I will still pick it all up only problem is storing it until prices go back up!
