I got a call from an old woman who is a widow of an engineer who wanted me to clean out her husbands workshop. He left behind all sorts of tools, scrap iron/steel a little copper, some aluminum and a 50 gallon drum full of turnings which she claims is inconel that her husband used to collect at work and bring home. I was wondering if it is worth scrapping in its own category or just mix it in with iron/steel? All advice is much appreciated.

Iron Mikes has prices for inconel between 6 and 7 bucks a pound, so you better check around, could be an awesome payout.

Turnings are usually much lower price due to oil on the turnings and other metals may be mixed in

Great question. Inconel scrap is more or less, the expensive part of stainless steel. Its basically all of the expensive metals, minus the iron, plus some even more expensive metals. The trick is finding somebody to buy it. There are many different types of Inconel, because just like Monel, Inconel is a brand name. So not only will you need to figure out exactly what type of Inconel you have, it may be an assortment of different types. And then, on top of that, you have turnings, not solids.
Be happy, because you have a 50 gallon drum full of some expensive metal. You will be getting payed at least as much as stainless steel turnings. But I don't think you'll find a buyer for much more than that. Call every scrap yard you have access too, and tell them exactly what you have told us, and tell them that you're shopping around for the best price. "Mixed Inconel Turnings" Good Luck!
Hollly crapp a 50 gallon drum full how much u think it weights like 500 lbs mann u hit the jack pot id be happy to get 500 lbs of steel if its accually 6 or 7 a pound u no how much money that adds up to I no I didn't help but I had to say something about this but if I were u ie just call around to all the scrapyards
Update on the widows workshop: I just got home about an hour ago from her house, finished up cleaning the workshop. The more digging i did the more inconel i found, i found 3 solid cylinders the had yellow writing on them that say inconel 713c. Not sure on their weight but from an estimate id say around 150 lbs a piece, im comparing them to lifting 2 bundles of shingles lol. As for other totals of metal found. ROUGH estimates, 20 lbs #2 copper, 30 lbs aluminum siding, 10 lbs brass...all nipples lol, and about 1 ton of mixed iron/steel. No SS. Will try to get pictures up soon as i find my usb cable for my phone lol
That's a great find. Are you paying the old lady anything? I would definitely pay her. Consider it a investment. Give her 15%-20% of the ticket price, and then give her a bunch of your cards. Make sure that she understands that she had a nice amount of metal. Explain to her that you only pay out some money on good hauls, and make sure she will refer you to people.
My yard buys Scrap Inconel 713c at about $5.25 per pound.
You have probably made about $1000-$1500! Hats off!

Mechanic688 I think those are middle men, the best way to sell converters is to de can the bead and comb, mill the comb in a ball mill to expose the values and homogenize the mix. Send a sample out for an independent assay before shipping to a refinery that process's this material.Quote:

It's the stainless ca and wire mesh I want to know about, no one claims to pay for this, are the sellers giving it away.
Later this week I will subject a small sample into some nitric acid, see if it comes up green which would be Nickel, from here I can send another sample out to the local University for an assay.
This is something I really want to know, are the can and wire mesh nickel scrap.

Well first of all we must know whether it is inconel or not. Get some information about inconel wire mesh that will help you to see the real picture. and if it is inconel then please let me know. may be i could help you out.
Randy's original post was on 3-10-2011 and his last activity was on 04-06-2011. I doubt that he's still looking to get rid of it, but you never know.
