i sanded down some copper tubes and they turned pink is this normal? if i sand down copper tubes from a air conditioner will it turn pink to and will that make it #1 copper like the rest of them? i had a aluminum coil from a dehumidifyer and they said it was sheet i thought they would count it as extrusion so what did they rip me and why is it not extrusion?
Mike1 you are working to hard for just pennies. The price difference between #1 and #2 copper is not but $.05 to $.10 usually. Your time, my time or for that matter anyone's usually isn't worth it. Separate the #1 from the #2 copper and move on to the next scrap endeavor. Just my $.02 for what it's worth.
Usually, the solder is what makes it #2, sometimes its excessive tarnish

The AL coil isn't extrusion because it wasn't pushed through a mold (think the old play dough sets). Its considered old sheet.
Just because the outside is shiny, doesn't mean the inside is clean, from me asking around (now keep in mind, I'm going by telephone calls, emails with pics etc as I'm dealing with tonnage) the yards I've spoken to say #1 is nothing outside, tarnish, solder dirt and nothing inside, oil, dirt, fluid etc. If it's "pink" I think they will know it's "old" copper and probably been used, but who knows.
After all that, like big said, your wasting your time when you could be looking for more, hope this helps mate!

if you want to clean copper just acid bath it. vinegar works so does ketchup.
less work than sanding.
Al Coils on a dehumidifier are extruded. They are a coil of pipe made from Al. 99.9% of Al pipe is made from an extrusion process.Quote:

^^I get that part but any yard I have ever dealt with never bought it as ''extruded.'' Unless it is the flat pieces that look like they were pushed through a mold they were bought as old sheet. I've never had mine bought as extruded anywhere. If your yards pay higher for it as extruded thats great!
As to the OP, I think it would still go as number 2 copper. BUT, each yard is different! Me, I don't have that kind of time to find out.
Unfortunately my yard buys all al. at same price. Up side is less sorting and fewer bins.
At my place paint and dirt doesn't make it #2, only solder joints, braided wire under the size of a pencil lead is #2.
