1 penny, 2 penny, 3 penny and soon I have five cents. I pick them up every time, maybe I'll get lucky, maybe I'm a "Dreamer", but another penny for free!
I'll pick up change. The largest thing is not to lose what you have. I bag and count my coins. When they're saved up, I take them into the bank. Last month I took in over $200 of coins. These were just odds and ends from the last year of purchases. Think about how much money you're losing if you don't keep track of coins.
This also works well for vehicle recyclers. A few years ago, we had a 1989 Scottsdale. There was over $10 of coins in the cab.
I rode my bike over to the local bakery to get half dozen blueberry muffins tonight, I come out of bakery and there is $.26 setting on the newspaper rack. Better than a penny and it covered the tax with two cents to spare (my lucky night).
So long as you are taking the steel with you when you sell other, more profitable goods, think of it as more of a bonus than a main source of income.
I find change in my pickings all the time and I add them to my home saving account; Coins are adding up fast in a big tin can.
Don't forget to check washers and dryers. I found a 14K gold bracelet in the dryer duct a few months back, and of course some change. The pawn shop offered me $45....I kept the bracelet.
My parents instilled the value of a piggy bank when I was very young. They told the story of a man that threw all of his change into the cellar every week for many, many years. According to the story he had a house fire that was a total loss. He replaced the home and all of the belongings with the "change" he had saved over a life time. I could not find this story when I did a Google search, so I cannot verify it. Regardless, I still collect all change and my piggy bank keeps getting bigger. I am sure I have enough to buy another used truck for my scrapping fleet.
Like Patriot my parents were "frugal" type people and taught me to be tight with my money. I always had a piggy bank around so when
a guy had some different sized ones at a flea market. We bought one we call Rosie. It stands about 1 1/2 ft tall and 2 1/2 ft. long and I don't think we'll ever fill it in my lifetime. But the earlier coins could have some age to them as they've been in there for 15 years already.
