Mistaken Identity
I had a friend tell me about some scrap forklifts that needed buying. They were at a local distributor.
"There are two of them, electric, and they need them hauled off. They already have a scrap guy offering them $350 a piece. The guy's name is Darren." he said.
So I drive over there and walk up to the roll-up door. A guy asked me if he can help me. "Yeah, I need to see Darren."
"You mean Derrick?"
"Yeah, probably so."
So he points me to Derrick and I tell Derrick that my friend told me that he had a couple of forklifts that they needed to sell and have hauled off.
"Actually, we have three of them." and he proceeds to show me two electrics and one gas lift.
I look them over and tell him that I know he has a scrapper offering $350, but I'm standing here with cash in my hand and the truck idling in the parking lot, and I will haul them off right now for $900."
He asks if I'll go $1000, and I do. I loaded them up and hauled them off.
A few days later my friend calls me and says " I thought you were going to go by and see Darren about those lifts?"
"I did." I said.
"I just talked to him, and he said he hasn't seen you." he said.
"I went by there Tuesday and bought all three." I said.
"Three? I didn't think he had but two. You went to ABC Sales? Talked to Darren?"
"No, I went to ABC Beverage. Talked to Derrick"
"Are you serious?"
LOL. So, long story, short: I went the right place this time, bought the two lifts AND a huge Gantry crane. Hauled them to the shop, and used the Gantry to pull the batteries out of the lifts.
I was very thankful for that mistake. ;-)
