Just wanted to share this list of gold content in CPU chips. It has a few other related items at the bottom (memory/fingers). Can anyone verify or dispute this info? Page is slow to open but interesting.

Those estimates seem kind of generous to me. Especially on the Ram.
I send things off to the refinery an I dont see those kind of amounts in my scrap....

Sure did. We send it all in lots an we get a assay done. (at times I will ask for a 3ed party assay an I will send in a company of my picking.)
The gold amount is not the same by pound. Some years an even some brands would use more or less on there boards.
CPUs even if you have 10 an you assay all 10 (of them all being the same type) they will come out with more or less gold..they dont all ways come out with the same amount in each one.

I understand there would be some margin of difference between like items. Wouldn't you process a batch and divide the amount recovered by units processed to give an average value? 3rd party assay seems important.

I had no idea there was gold in computers. I have taken many many towers apart down to the boards and turn those in at one place that buys them. first I remove any wiring and aluminum. Which chip is the CPU and how many would I need to turn in for gold? Is that how you do it; turn the chips in whole?
Boy did I screw up, im a Firefighter by profession and just started scrapping. A few months ago, before I got into this, a local sporting goods store shut down and told the FD we could have anything we wanted out of there, after all the product was sold. We got some shelving and other odds and ends and used the building for some training. Anyway, when it first shut down there were a bunch of old desk top towers just laying around, never thought much about them before. Went back today and only found one left but there are a bunch of monitors which im going to collect for copper. Live and learn.
Most people don't know about the gold in computers an it was something people did not go around telling for a wile. Reason being they did not want others to know what was going on in the back ground an why people wanted them. So they where able to charge to remove them an then take them apart an harvest the gold an other metals from them. Now there are a good bit of people who KNOW about it an the word is getting out there an that is part why computers are becoming hard to come by but at the same time there is more of it out there...just have to dig for it.Quote:

In monitors there are low grade circuit boards and the #2 copper around the tube yoke(be careful of the voltage, right Hoss) the #2 copper can be knocked apart with a hammer, after you remove it from the tv. Some misc. wire and a bigger degaussing cable(copper) that goes around the 4 corners of the tube. Smaller transformer and maybe 1 or 2 alum. heatsinks on the circuit board. I'll get a pic of one opened up tonight after dialysis.

Thanks 688, I can get a hold of a bunch of computer monitors and a bunch of small security type monitors. Could be a good haul.
