what kind of wire is the one that's wrapped in black tape from TV's?

I've recently been tearing down down some tv's and monitors. I'm also still fairly new to the scrap scene and still have lots to learn. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you knew what the thick black cable that has a black tape wrapped around it is? I already stripped quite a bit of it and I'm thinking it's copper coated aluminum wire. I watched a really detailed video on youtube on scrapping a tv but the guy says it's solid copper but I think he may be wrong. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Cut the cable. If the ends are aluminum colored ---it is.

Thanks Mick! I really wish I hadn't of spent alot of time stripping all that wire. Now, I have a huge mess to clean up. LOL The yards should still take it as "aluminum wire", right?

No mechanic, yer right. It's not hard to type a few words into the search feature. Im getting tired of seeing people explain everything 14 times. When a member makes a great topic with pictures and explanations, why not just take a few seconds to find that topic and learn from it.

Seems like every single topic i see is full of questions that could be answered by taking a 10 second trip with the search feature.

Here it depends on if it's clear varnish it'll go as #1 but if a colored varnish then it's #2

I was going to throw this in the same sack as the wire from inside my TV coils. Maybe I need to research copper types before I throw money away!

What I do is take my mini bolt cutters, and cut the degaussing wire into about 6 inch sections...then I just find where the tape starts and start unraveling it. After a couple tries, you can actually just pull the tape straight off without doing hand circles.

I stabbed my pointer finger last night with a screw driver, sorry for any typos.

I just take my razor knife and slice all the way around the degaussing circle and peel the outer cover off in one big batch, then just fold up the copper/alum.

Maybe informational threads such as the one you are speaking of should be stickied or sorted into a separate forum. I have personally used the search feature several times and sometimes us noobs just don't know the proper terminology

Yea, but when the forum starts to accumulate more members, which inevitably it will reading thru 40,000 threads to find the answer to one question will be what one might call "over the top". But hey if people writing very nice informational threads want them to be lost 20 pages deep by all means don't sticky them

EDIT: or maybe make a forum for just informational threads

One thing that can help this is carefully worded titles to threads. Yes I agree. I think that a member should be able to tell the content of a thread just by reading the title. That does help a bunch. But, please do a search before asking questions.

Every other forum I have ever read takes the time to sticky informational posts and it's foolish to say that every thread is "informational" because every thread is not informational, but I guess you can't argue with stupid so when all the excellent threads people have contributed sink to page 300 you heard it here first.
