Hi everyone. Great forum. I am new to scrapping and trying to learn. We have picked up toaster ovens, and crock pots and his fellow scrappers just throw into the steel pile after removing cord. Is there more to these items and should they be broken down?
First thing I'd check is for Aluminum and Stainless Steel.
Hmm not sure to be honest but never hurts to smash one open to find out. But I dont think there will be much in either one of them.
I doubt there is much in them, Stainless Steel and aluminum would be the most you would find I would imagine. Smash one open, take pictures and post your findings. :)
One of the best ways to learn is by experience. If you do not know if something is worth taking apart or not, do it anyway. If there is nothing in it worth separating, then next time you will know just to toss it in the mixed pile as is (after removing the power cord). If there is non ferrous in it, next time you will know you need to take it apart. A person remembers better when they have hands on experience.
A toaster oven or a heater will have either a Ni-Chrome element or a Ceramic-type element. Not sure if it is profitable to mess with unless you have a lot of them. I doubt the Ceramic-type are worth anything, but I'll confess to ignorance on that account.

unless it contains stainless "non magnetic" or aluminum or it has a excessive amount of copper wire. No don't break it down.
Stuff like this in most cases just cut the cord & scrap it. You can make more money investing the time to find more scrap.
Now if it is a commercial unit things change. If its a commercial unit call up local restaurant supply companies, the ones that sell used equipment. It might bring 3, 4, 5 times the money or even more!
There is very little SS or al in a toaster. Its not enough to make it worth your while. There is a small circuit board or two, but again, not worth it.
Just tore one down 2 or 3 days ago.
