Check this out, brass screen wire

I'm sure most of you have recycled the aluminum screen panels from windows. Most have fiberglass screen in them nowadays held in with a rubber strip but I used to get older ones that were aluminum screen or even galvanized steel.

I grabbed this one from an illegal dump and it had a steel frame. Judging by the look of it I figured it was from the 1920s or 1930s. I threw it in the bed of my truck and didn't think about. After a few days of dumping stuff on top of it, I noticed the screen wire was gold colored where it had bee scraped. I checked and sure enough it's brass. I cut out the wire and sent the frame with the rest of the load. Pretty neat eh?

Brass screen wire on a steel frame? Never heard of it.

How was it attached to the frames? Could it have been a straining cloth that someone used to ''make'' or replace an old screen?

Brass screen was very common up until the 50s and 60s. You can still buy it today. Google "brass window screen".... lots of sites where you can buy it new.

The screen was held in pretty much the way the plastic screen is held in an aluminum frame today but instead of using a rubber strip, a u shaped steel channel was used. I have some photos of if before it got scrapped that I'll put on photobucket or something so you guys can see what it looks like. I had never run across this before but I bet is lasts forever.
