Found a tree stump , a solid chunk of wood the sign said Black Walnut - then the owner said you can take it " I heard guys like it for gun stocks" .Does any one think i found some thing with value ? & if yes how do i link it up to person who will pay for it ?
It would be good for a wood worker.
That Walnut would make for a great band saw jewelry box project.
You know the ones with hidden compartments and all from one hunk of wood.
I use to make them back in the day and made good coin also. Humm maybe I should start making them again.
Yeah I'd say it's worth something if you can find the right buyer. Take a couple of pics of it and throw it up on Craigslist under "materiels". You aren't clear about how big it is or how much usable wood there is so I won't make a guess about value.
depending upon quality and size, there are several Amish saw mills that pay pretty decent for usuable wood like this.
It is 3 1/2 foot high 3 foot round weighs more then 125 lbs Has some very small worm holes that the guy says makes it more valuable
A quick check on Internet seems to point $35 - $40 per ton and thats the whole tree . I do seem to see that there is desire for black walnut stumps in fine condition . must be some thing about the stump maybe it's the dense area of tree , good for wood working . Think I could still make more $$ with tires on wheels even They get $35 per ton and easer to find .Till i visit the Amish I seem to now be the new owner
In my youth I worked for a landscaping company, I'm 58 and have worked at a lot of different jobs. We sometimes would get hardwood stumps with the main roots still attached. Let the stump dry out and clean with a power washer and seal with a clear outdoor varnish. We would then put it in a planting as a focal point with the roots up. It was interesting and in larger cities you might be able to move them with landscape designers. Just another idea. Best to all, Mike.
Walnut is very popular over here for bespoke gun stock and small arms & knife makers. Black walnut even more so.
Then if it is 'fiddle back' its worth some very nice coin!!

"Fiddleback is a feature of regular pattern caused by compression of timber fibers. It is one expression of the stresses a tree experiences as it grows.
Weight is a common source of compression and a stout large tree such as River Red Gum can exhibit marked compression on all sides of the truck.
You will also find compression marks under heavy branches and aroundlarger roots where the tree grows cells in a compressed space to counter the weight.
It will also occur where trees are regularly subject to a strong prevailing wind or grow on steep slopes for example. These forms of compression often result in tension on the opposite side of the truck where the fibers are literally stretched. Boards cut from this section of the tree are more prone to bowing when cut as the stresses are relieved.
Its worth a stroll in the forest to check for horizontal ripples in the truck of the tree. This is often a sign that compression marks and probably fiddle back is to found under the surface."
I would find a small saw mill and have it ripped into 4" wide strips, or contact a local wood workers group. They would love it, but I don't think you can retire of the profit :)

I would not cut it up at all!
Being a solid nice sized hunk of wood gives the artist more choices to work with.
Look at bandsaw jewelry box photos you will see what I speak of.
Done right they are worth nice money, but it takes solid wood to make them. That stump would make several.
The problem with not cutting it up is that most likely it will split and check as it continues to dry. If you can saw it in 1/2 down the center with a chain saw that would work, or try to sell it as soon as possible. Another crafts person that might want it is a wood turner, who will want it to be in one piece, still fairly green so they can cut it up with a chainsaw and turn it on the lathe right away. Walnut develops nice color if it sits awhile, so maybe this piece is just getting better as it ages.
We have a nice black walnut stump in our house. We got it from my Grandpa when he died. Its 10 ft wide, and 4 foot tall. Lord knows how much it weighs. We use it as a table, kind of. Its beautiful, great color, hasnt split yet.
We have a "wood worker" friend, who does EVERYTHING with different types of wood. Lathe, sculpture, everything. About a year ago he had a friend come over and look at our stump, the guy offered us $5000. Not $500, $5000.
I know yer stump aint as big as ours, but i'm just saying. Sometimes they're cool to hang onto, sometimes its nice just to get rid of it to turn a profit.

some wood is very valuable, depends on the color and grain, some is valuable because it is llegal to cut any more. here in florida cypris logs are mined from rivers and creeks at huge prices, it is a whole industry here. sort of like treeasure hunting. arround the bottom of a cypris are little rounded stumps called knees. people arround here used to cut them and make little trolls or gomes out of them. today if you get caught cutting one it is a huge fine and prison time, not jail time. even if you have one in your posession that you found you better be able to prove how and where you got it.
You can sell wood on ebay. I was looking around and saw a guy sold a Mesquite stump for $75 on there. I collect Mesquite when I see it (which is often in west Texas) for my grill and cut the stump off the last tree I found.
Search the completed listings in the catagory "lumber" for an idea of what to ask for it.
Its got some value, just gotta find someone who wants it. A stump has real interesting patterns to it, should be valuable to a person who makes veneer or small things. Don't cut it, let them do that.
