A neighbor put an old Kenmore dryer at the curb. The model is 110.87371600. I want to pull out the electric motor. What's the quickest way to do it? I removed the back panel but could not see where the motor is, so I guess I'll have to take it apart some more. What do I need to remove before I can get to the motor? Is it hard to take the motor out? Thanks.
You will need 1/4, 5/16 nutdrivers, wire cutters, a couple of screwdrivers and a hammer. I take apart the whole dryer. you will have to remove the lint chute after you take the back off. There is a fan blade under the lint chute that I break off with a hammer. Then the cabinet needs to be removed to get to the front of the motor. There are 2 clips that need to be removed with a flat head screwdriver. Should take about 15 minutes to remove the motor. Some of the dryer drums are Stainless Steel.
Dryers in general are very easy. tip the dryer on its front. look about half way down on the right side. there should be 2 slide pieces and a bolt or 3 screws kinda close together. you will also see (tward the backside of the dryer) there should be about 4-5 self tapping screws that go side to side. if you have a torch (stay high on the ribs) if you can while cutting a hole around the motor. use a pair of gloves, vice grip to pull the metal away and the motor should come with it but not very far. There will be a tensioner, belt, and bracket for the motor. snip the belt, cut the tensioner and bracket. either cut the shaft for the dryer fan, or take a prybar and get aggressive with the motor pulling it against the plastic fan. total time about 2 minutes and the motor is at your feet
the drum is also nice for scrap storage/sorting. I get beat up garbage cans for free, but I would hate to buy new ones for scrapping
Usually you can remove the motor very easily. Just unclamp it, and lift it out.
First, check if the wire in the motor is Copper or Ali.
Fir some reason the driers often have ali wire in the motors.
I read that ali wire motors don't get hot like copper wired ones do. That seems right when yiu take into account all the furry stuff that's in driers.
