I keep all the fasteners that I remove while breaking scrap down in a bucket for sorting later.
Not all fasteners are steel, some are brass, copper, aluminum, and stainless steel.
Why throw the good fasteners in the shred pile when you can make a little more money with little effort.

Them screws that hold the yoke on the tube, i've heard those are copper, aluminum, and stainless. Anybody know for sure what they might be?

The ones that I had were stainless, they aren't magnetic but spark when put against the grinder.

I do the same thing with all my fasteners. Really like your bag trick for the magnets, great idea.
I read somewhere here in NZ, that if you fill a 55 gallon drum with nuts, bolts & screws.
You get paid the 'Heavy steel' price & they add another $20 just because you put it all in a drum, saving them processing.
Is that true elsewhere?
Good idea, CM, I changed it around a little. Instead of the bag I used an old French Onion chip dip container with a big speaker magnet in it. Set container on screws, held container over shred bucket, pulled magnet up, and listend to the cash register in my head as the screws bounced off the other shred in the bucket. The register actually sounds more like slot machine bells come to think of it....
this is a great idea, i will def get my kids to do this for me now.
When I am breaking down something I use one of the bowls with the magnet on the bottom of them that mechanics use. My wife bought be a couple of them around Christmas time cheap from Biglots. If it is still sliding around the bowl then I know it's either brass or stainless because the tin one are magnetized in place.

Ones magnetic, the closest one to the screen is non-magnetic. Sometimes they have a little brass metal in there too..Quote:
