Very new to computer recycling. Until this evening all the CPU's I've come across where attached directly to the motherboard. Then I came across one of these....

There is a large aluminium heat sink on the other side and I'm assuming the CPU sandwiched in the middle with no obvious way (to my eyes anyway) on how to get to it.

Yup, that is a slot processor. The 'cpu' is the entire mini board, about the size of 3 sticks of ram stacked on top of each other. I use a screwdriver to wedge between the plastic and chip and break a corner free. Rip the plastic off, often the processor is held in place by a pair of little metal brackets. Pop those off, seperate the aluminum and you are set, you sell the board as is with no further seperation.
