At work, these get replaced regularly. And are just thrown to the ground. I've saved a few of them, and can get lots, LOTS more. I believe they are tungsten carbide tips. my magnet sticks to the tip, but it's a weak pull.
I will take one to my yard on my next trip, and see what they say, but I want to get the forums input too.

worst case you get steel prices 12 cents a lb here, plus they are free check with your boss and takem all :)
(IF) I figured out how to get them off, could the tips be sold? would it be worth it? does anyone have any experience with these? or anything similar?
This is my best option I think. give the mail man some heavy ass packages! :)

Sames as scrap for gold would you trust someone you cant see eye to eye who promises to pay moe then the other? Take it to a scrap yard hit it with a niton gun worst case 9 to 10 dollars a lb or more.

NICE! i'm gonna keep grabbing as many as I can. Once I get my new bench vice mounted, I'll try to figure out how to get the tips off. hopefully I can just twist em off with a pipe wrench or something.
you have to heat them up to seprate them form the base metal and the tips are worth alot and you also have the base metal to sell to scrap yard. Google machine tool recyclers they are a good people to sell to and give good price. I live close enough to them that i take my tips straight to them and i dont have any problems with them at all.
i have a few tons, of drill bits , with tungsten carbide inserts, i want to know the process to extract the inserts, would anyone help me with some information?

Carbide is very very hard, but that makes it brittle. So if you go with a chisle & hammer, all it will do is snap parts of the carbide tip off.
