pretty great day :)
started out the day scrapping a 96 4x4 blazer that i had picked up yesterday they had rolled it, made good money and still got the wheels, radiator, and battery the cat was EMPTY grrrrrrrr. went and bought a ford contour we made a little got two alum wheels not sure why the battery and the radiator, cat was EMPTY and it was one of those jokers that come out the front grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. sucks to cut them off and find it out. anyway headed out to pick up a dodge durango, i told my partner if this thing doesnt have alum wheels on it we will just cut off the cat and take it across the scales instead of taking it back to the house and doing it right (trying to be lazy i gotta work tonight). well it had alum wheels and a matching one under the truck. bad transmission the guy said, we loaded it up took it to the house. anyway started right up. found the dealer sheet that was on the window when it was new SLT PLUS :) it has a 5.9 or 360 in it sounds good and loud, out the pipes :) my partner got to jacking around with the four wheel drive shifter and the truck jerked, then back out huh??? anyway something is messed up in the 4x4 part the transmission is fine, if we pull the shifter way down about where low would be its in 2wheel drive, and even farther where you shouldnt even be able to pull puts it in 4 high, you gotta hold it in both these spots runs and drives good until you let go of the shifter, we gonna look at it closer tomorrow, i think im gonna keep it if it don't cost too much i paid 425 for it figuring id get around 600 at the yard broke down

Good looking rig, how many miles on it?
-
230,000 i know thats alot but the insides pretty clean, new battery and new clamps, i went out and looked at it, im no mechanic and dont pretend to be( i just know how to tear crap up ) but the part that has the drive shafts in it(transfer case i believe) is cracked and there is a chain that is visible in two spots and all the bolts are loose, im thinking all this is my problem but i wonder why the shifter is so far off, anyway ill play with it, call some salvage yards tomorrow maybe ill get lucky. its the first one i bought to scrap i wanted to keep, my partner has kept two so far.

With a cracked transfer case, it's pretty much guaranteed that's your problem. If it pulls while you are holding the handle down, I'm going to say something is wrong with the linkage. Maybe the previous owner hit something, cracking the transfer case and damaging the linkage inside or maybe the linkage is binding up and put a crack in the housing. If you end up keeping it and fixing it, you're going to want to replace the transfer case if you want any kind of longevity out of it. It won't take long for dirt and rocks to find their way in there and lock it up. If it's a small crack you may be able to weld it or put some JB Weld on it for a quick fix. Good luck with it. It looks pretty good to have 230,000 miles on it!

The transfer case is like 200 bucks. And take a hour on your back to replace. Too bad ya wasnt close to Pa, I would look at it and fix. I would say that maybe the linkage is fine, just change the t-case. Then sell it for 3 grand..lol..

thanks ozzy and forward, ive found them online for 300 already gonna check the local yards today and see if they got one. ive got 14 alum wheels to break down, a stack of radiators to make clean, and a shipload of fireextinguishers, so in reality its gonna cost me blood sweat and tears :)

great score! I'd fix it and keep it if you have a use for it. But you gotta change the windshield decal. :)
