Japanese Tsunami Debris reaches the US West Coast

The 2011 Japanese Tsunami sucked 20 million tons of debris into the Pacific Ocean. It's a jumbled mass of houses, cars, boats and belongings; and it's gradually moving across the Pacific Ocean towards the US west coast.

Beachcombers along the California coast and farther north are reporting the first appearance of debris.

Rumors are starting to circulate: “That wave wiped out whole towns, I’m thinking just about anything could show up here,” said Mr. Anderson, 58, of Forks, Wash. “I’ve heard people talking about floating safes full of Japanese money.”

Too bad all the best stuff probably sank during the trip over.

The terror builds so gradually -- starting with a mild goodness gracious, the sequence of images relentlessly pushes other emotions out of my mind until, by the end, I'm cornered and whispering: Sweet Jesus have mercy.

As shocking and terrible as these videos are, they always bring me back Carlin's simple, breathtaking, and somehow strangely zen-like peaceful conclusion: Stop worrying, we're only here for the plastic. It's probably far too glib, but somehow it makes life and all its tragedies somewhat more bearable.
