To day was interesting I loaded up with some thing i never did before , with a shovel 810 lb of metal turnings. it was steel with a little AL the yard used a magnet to pick up so some AL was left over
the Turnings went on to the short pile . The bottom line is - I was only paid $64 for 810 lb to me thats a rip off as a mix load has in my opinion less actual metal considering plastic is often on a item that is put to the mix . Since they put it to short it's clearly valuable to them.
So was i taken ?
there is another batch looks like 1000 lb its rusty so it is steel , If it was not such a nasty item to keep around i could load it as filler with my regular load for about .11 I could put around 50 lb with out to much complaint NOT 1000

How much did they pay you , how many pounds and what price for what grade? What happened to the Al? Mike.

Al swept up put in a container 810 lb @ $64 = .8
But mix as of today was .11

Every time I've glanced at a price for turnings it seemed low...I don't think yards like them much.

Could be it can hide a lot of dirt so they pay less. Mike.

maybe they loose more of it in the melting process

I think oil contamination plays a part.

I know my yard pays less for turnings because of the oil and possible dirt in it.

Not so far from truth, next batch that has been sitting out in the elements, it has surface rust , oil and dirt are gone I need some ovens and a fridge or two and fill em . really what could they say -- not like I'm putting bricks in a oven .

No said nothing, now if I saw an area that they put it separate then all of the above statements at my yard would be ok but when you see an item that i see is a low payer BUT low an be hold 123 its put it with short so its all just mixed - thats not sharing the love.

Call the yard and get a quote for the other 1000 lbs. I wonder how much lower than the steal price they will quote. You said that this lot looks like all steel turnings...

I have heard the turnings argument from buyers before. I compeetly understand the shavings and chips contain alot of oil. I did not see your material, but at my buyer, anything under 3x2 in size and of solid or thick steel makup (turnings) is paying .17 right now. I try and keep all my short iron together and seprate from the shearing as they wont take the time to seperate it out of the hopper. That isint necessarly a bad thing as it comes back around in other ways to benifit if you have some sheet in the bottom of a tub.

I am not saying you got stuck, or that you diddnt because I never saw your material but I would have questioned it is a respectful manner.

They probably are using it as filler just like we stuff things with filler.

I am breaking up the load and taking 250 lb at a time , like i did today just mixed it in with lawn mower a grill ect. like what are they gonna say to me i am not selling them wood or plastic . So the product is at the job sight and i will just go each day for a bit at a time . so I'm at .11 now

Y'all are exactly right. Turnings aren't desirable for a plethora of reasons. For one they often contain excessive dirt and oil. They also have a much lower recovery than solids when sent to the mill. Finally, they are hard to get rid of. We end up blending them in with other loads we send to the mills. I would have gotten you $80-$100 a ton for them.

so $64 for 810 lb was a good price / compared to $80 - $100 per ton. So my yard mixed it for my benefit. well I'll see how long I can sell them ovens with Turnings . One thing I noticed that makes the turnings worth less is that they clean the lave with a Polly propylene pipe so turnings are often mixed with a stretchy plastic
