Good Problem - 50,000lbs of printers...........per month

I got a line on a bunch of printers. trying to figure out if what I should offer, if anything.
I have to pay for shipping, and they have to be processed at my facility. Has anyone calculated processing time for printers in manhours per pound?

5-7 cents per pound seems to be the going rate for whole scrap printers, but this contract they have to be destroyed.

I calculated about 10 cents per pound of processed printers not counting plastic on an analysis of a good mix of 5000lbs of printers

I believe the shipping will cost me 2.5 cents per pound.

any thoughts on what I could offer? what I should look out for?

Personally I would use my resources for something else.

Too many variables with printers.

The amount of space, additional help, and cost of doing business wouldnt be justified atleast for us.

Only if you got them for free. You already have to pay for the shipping and then take your time or employees time in processing them.

If they want YOU to destroy them, I would definitely charge for that. I mean, after all, the crushers at the yard are already going to do that, and unlike computers, printers hold no personal information.

Definitely use your time and money for more better ventures.

While you're right about personal printers, some of the larger office printers do store data. I remember seeing a 60 minutes article about medical info being retreived off of scrapped printers.http://www.office.xerox.com/latest/SECWP-01UA.pdf

I once had a guy offer me .16/lb for printers. Something seemed fishy so I passed. But we generally take them for free and sell them at .09/lb to a shredder located in STL. They are R2 certified and we can account for where they are going. For large loads we pay .03/lb for them.

While, I am sure that all printers do store some data, I have never met any printer that would store personal information. Especially from a company. There is to much risk of a multi million dollar lawsuit if someone's information is on something like that and can be easily retrievable.

Lots of variables as has already been stated. I pay $0.11 to my regulars and I'm making money. If you could find a good price to sell the plastic for I think it would be very viable.

You really should research things prior to posting. Printers do store information in them. Lots of information. Even some of your simple home printers, print a microscopic serial number on every page you print to allow law enforcement to track down documents. Printers are just like computers. They need to be handled and disposed of properly or your info is going to end up in the wrong peoples hands.

with all due respect, but if I did that, I be majorly poor.

unlike some of you I do not deal witb ewaste full time. only when I get it in.

I take the word that it can store information on it but unless your really into the tech world no one ia going to think of using a printer. they will go for the computer.

it wouldn't surprise me at all on what printers can store.

heck I give it 10 or less years before everything is ran by computers.

the only place a printer will have information is the circuit boards.

treat as a cost of business to clients...take them out and break them into pieces.

I am familiar with the Oce brand of commercial printer/copiers as I have used them quite a bit. These have a 3.5 inch hard drive inside the copier that can be removed. You can scan and store multiple pages from the machine to the hard drive, use the hard drive as a print server to spool information or you can save documents to the hard drive so that if you regularly need to print copies of a certain document you can select it from the panel and print it without needing to use a computer or have a paper copy to scan.

The printer/copier has a hard drive that needs to be removed and dealt with to ensure data security.

Just to add, these are not little machines. I have personally helped move the smallest of the Oce range and it took 6 men to lift and handle it.

I wish I could get stuff shipped for 2.5 cents per pound. That would be great.

Maybe look into investing in a small shredder for yourself? It would probably pay for itself eventually, especially if you're getting 25 tons of printers per month. You wouldn't have to pay for extra helpers and it would be far less time consuming
