Fundraiser idea

So around here it is hard to get people to part with their personal computers even for money - but I had an idea that I would like to float.

Some of the people on the forum ( Julie, for one ) have collected e-scrap to make money for non-profit activities. What if we offered non-profits a chance to make money?

What I have in mind is telling them that we will buy e-scrap from them as a fundraiser. We will pay a specific amount for certain items - as much as they can collect from their members or the public by a certain date.

People who donate to the non-profits could get a tax write-off, the organization would get money and we would get scrap. Everybody wins.

Don't recall seeing this discussed before, forgive me if it has been.

I've seen this done with cell phones and ink cartridges, there are several websites that offer plans to non-profits, you might look at them to see how it works.

Yes! Earth Day is coming up and its a great time to offer said services. Next Tuesday I'm bringing my trailer to my college all day to accept electroninc donations and the school is doing all the advertising. I also have a fundraiser set up for July with teh Humaine Society doing the same thing. With my lawn care in full swing I don't have the time to track down as many computers but these events should turn out great!

Yep. This works very well. There have been a couple discussions on here about it and some more that are on another sight. However, we have not had a full blown discussion about it. I will be getting one going soon myself. One thing I plan to incorporate is a premium somewhere around 10% or so higher than my normal purchase price for obvious reasons. Namely it should garner a good bit of material and because it is a charity.

well its a good idea, but the red tape and burocratic nightmare in dealing with a large non profit. would be a full time job for a couple of months I think. f you think dealing with the government is a task you aint seen nothin yet till you start dealing with a do gooder with and an eleitest attitude. just my experience. I think it would take some deep pockets. I have tried to deal with just my local do good agencys. $1000 suit , tie, Goochie loafers and all to them I was just another homeless guy looking for bits of scrap to buy another jug of wine.( this is how they made me feel).

Not sayin it isnt a good Idea, in fact some one WILL DO IT. but it will be one of the 1 800 buy or donate to the what ever guys probably owned by some one in India or Saudi.

not tryin to be a wet blanket just realistic I would maybe start with the church youth groups or the local scouts.

Thanks for that. Yes, I was thinking about starting with church groups since they have autonomy - probably the minister can make a decision without having to get the approval of a board of directors or something. I'm guessing.

Parrothead - yes, definitely plan to pay more to non-profits than to the general public.

Like olddude said - youth groups.

They're always needing money. Maybe you could collaborate with them when they're doing a yard sale. Have a drop off area for broken electronics. Prior to the sale you would have the teens tell everyone they know to bring their broken/unwanted electronics to the sale.

It'd be like a mini army of people spreading the word.

And who doesn't want to help a teen go on a trip? It's a win/win for all.
