Out by me, its pretty urban. typical suburbs. garbage pickup is wednesday around 12ish. ive noticed the big stuff, appliances, grills, etc. are out early, say 6 o clock on tuesday. I make a weekly run around 8 30.
What times are usually the best (if you go early you may get something big but no one has anything out. if you wait to long its picked over)
I do the same thing every Tuesday night and Early Wed, Morning
I'm out in Garbage night every Sunday night, Monday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night.. I could go to a garbage night every night minus Sunday, but just be a longer drive.
Usually start by 7:30pm.

I have called the garbage companies and have a full scedule of their routs in town, but gas is getting so expensive and the tweekers are willing to fight over an electric cord so im looking at new Ideas. good luck, you will learn much here.

I do both. Residential is easy because of the obvious cluster...Commercial is a bit more scattered, and something I don't really make a route for...just one of those if I'm there, i'll check.
No, the extent of my scrapping is either garbage hunting or checking the free section on CL. I Just stay in the neighborhood (dont stay out long, maybe til 9:15 or so)
There are so many people doing it right now that for a part-timer it's difficult to find stuff the night before garbage day. If you get lucky you find it within 30 minutes of it being put out. Otherwise it's gone. I find my best stuff on non-garbage nights. If they have an appliance, it's likely getting put out no matter what day it is. You have a better window to find it. But even then, several of the other scrappers will run every neighborhood at least once a day.
My best days are Saturday and Sundays, but only in areas without Monday pickup. The garbage trucks usually roll earlier on Saturday. If an item gets put out that afternoon, I find I have a better chance of getting it. It seems I see less scrappers on the road on Saturday than any other day. Also rain seems to keep them away. They'll still run areas that have garbage pickup the next day, but tend to stay away from the others.
I know this sounds bad, but I am ready for prices to crash. Huge price swings are great. Let prices fall to $7 per 100lb on shreddable and you find 5 times as much.
I do my best on Saturdays and Sundays too. Doesn't seem to be as many other scrappers out there then. There are lot of people doing it around here too, but only if it fits their schedule and isn't too hot, cold, wet, etc. I actually had best best runs during this last heat wave...lol.
I find all times have a possibility, if say wed is a garbage day. The fun starts on Tues . But i also find at the last moment during garbage truck pick up one will get some hits from people put stuff out late. True about Hot or Cold , less competition during inclement weather.
I noticed early in the morning of pick up day their is so much more trash out. ( bin late to work few times) But the night before I always see the same scrappers trucks going by over an over each time they have more so I guess the best way is to drive your area a few times... After work. Before dinner. After dinner. Before bed. Wife wakes u in middle of night
well for me it comes down to filling up the truck . you never know what mother load you will find / garbage day or not . Seems that if you just get out on the road some how it happens. In our economy people consume & get rid of what disturbs them, much of it has metal. whats nice is many home owners are sensitive to the scrapers as they leave item in plane view
If i see the home owner i often say thank you & give a smile.
we dont have garbage in front of houses between curb and sidewalk we have alleys behind houses do you still go to these places at night or only by curb there isnt much traffic around here thru alleys at night just dont want to get in trouble wouldn't mind working at night though lot cooler its been 100 degrees for like 40 days in a row
by car and curb, LUCK !! Dumpsters behind building i'll take a look & grab but we should get permission . Night i am not crazy about gotta have a flash light you end up standing out . All in All no one wants to have to enplane them selves to the police
I go out night before trash day at about 8pm. Right before sun goes down and after dinner. Go around my neighborhood and spend about 2 hours and usualy get half a pickup truck load or better each week.
Another thing. Garage sales are common on Fridays and Saturdays. Make a note of them when you drive by and check back after they're over. A lot of times the leftover stuff ends up by the curb.
ive done some "field research" and found atleast for me the best time to look is:
after dinner (around 5 pm)
i ride my bike and just go around my subdivision a few times. i stopped driving because i get aobut 14mpg.
i have a milk crate set up on the back. haha i have carried everything from 19402 hassock fans, to camcorders to satellite dishes in there. i get some looks lol.
the only time i drive is if i see something big (industrial size micro last week) there isnt much chance that it will get taken as i am only about 5 minutes to the house and back.
because it gets dark around 8 now, thats about when i go in. it will get tough trying to balance 2 ap classes, track, and scrapping :(
Around 6 or 7 pm in the evening is sometimes good. Before dark.
I normally roll the truck out an hour or 2 before the garbage truck starts it's rounds in the morning.
I have known as the rubbish organizations and have a complete scedule of their routs in city, but gas is getting so costly and the tweekers are willing to combat over a powered cable so im looking at new Thoughts. enjoy, you will understand much here.
