First Dumpster Dive!

After tearing apart computers for a few days, I ran out of things to do. Just out of sheer boredom I decided to head out on a dumpster run. First was an apartment dumpster. Got a couple hundred lbs of shear scrap and a 10 lb pure brass lamp. Second dumpster had a virgin tower(about to crack that beast open right now! It's BIG) and monitor. Third dumpster had about 40 lbs worth of cast iron pans and about 50 lbs of small tin sheets. That's about it but for my first time I think it was a good night!

PS: I could throw up some pics of that tower, like what type of cpu is in it, if you guys want :D

You could get probable $10 bucks for the video card on ebay. Just have to make sure it works is all. Also how much ram was there? You can get more than scrap value for them too if the sticks are 1gb each.

Depending on the cast iron pans you may make more on them than all the other stuff you found. I strongly suggest you hold them til you have enough "junk" to take to a flea market. In fact I suggest you go to a flea market and get a good idea of prices for cast iron pans and other items so you are aware of their value. I assure you the pans are worth much more than scrap. Congrats on some good finds, Mike.

I agree with miked about the cast iron pans. Also look for brand names and do some research. I made out real good with some types of cast iron cookware. Then, I loaded up what was left to take to the scrap yard. They were on the back end of the trailer. When I swung into a gas station, a guy spotted them from about 50' away. He made a beeline over and bought every one I had to decorate his camp. He made a standing order to buy every piece of cast iron cookware I get.

YEah cast iron is no joke. Here is the holy grail of cast iron frying pan. Griswold #2 sold for over $800 on ebay.

Oh man were you guys right about the pans... Did a little snooping around and discovered I have some Wagners. I have Wagner #8,# 9, and #10 skillets. My fiance's dad is real into auctions and flea markets. Gonna give him a call an make both our days!

I picked up a griswold dutch oven out of a pile of scrap. Its a bit rusty but should clean up well and fetch a nice price! If it says "china" on the back its junk scrap metal. Griswolds are worth some good money!

Ah, was hopin for a little more then $10 bucks but certainly not complainin :D And sadly, all four ram sticks were only 512 MB...

Well if all 4 are the same batch you might get lucky and sell the whole 2gb bundle for 10 bucks on ebay. I did it once. Only once and it took 2 weeks to sell them. But free listing and was more than scrap value so no big deal. Never hurts to throw it up on ebay and see. I usualy offer free shipping and start my auction at no less then $8 that way it pays for fees and shipping. At $8 you profit about $1.50 for the item if it sells for that. The ram you could ship in first class padded envelope for under $2 so more profit there.

hate to be the buzz kill david but i think your lamp is die cast......your wagner pans are the real deal though.........great find!!!!

Good for you David....I've never had such a good dive and I've been swimming in dumpsters for over a year now !!! I'm going right over to my mothers house to see if her frying pans are Griswalds !

Any easy way to tell? I scrapped some of the outside off and it still has the brass color. Shiny too!

Yeah, idk. I was just sitting there and I really wasn't going to go out but for some reason just had a gut feeling I should. Pays to listen to your gut! I also think dumpster diving is an untapped resource in my area, at least until others see me doing it lol.

why are you people dragging up old threads?

This post is over 13 months old.

Cast iron pans, look on the bottom and if there is a ring on it then it is very old. That ring was for putting on the old wood burning stoves, the ring would set in the hole in the stove.

i personally like it when the old threads come up, i do a double take when i see the old guys that i used to see post everyday

I for one am glad one these pop up now and then, shows people are looking for answers, digging around in the archives and sometimes its nice to see a thread I haven't before..even if it is over 13 months old. Sometimes old info is good info. An there really is a simple solution if you don't like a thread...Don't read it. Simple solutions for simple problems. :p
