$100 bucks?!?! Dang dude.. I can't find jack for $100 bucks around here! NICE Score
(Nice Rig and Trailer too!!)
Yeah i find i have better luck if i ask them "so what where you lookin to get for it?" rather than telling them what id pay. You can work them down rather than them trying to work you up in price. Most people either have no idea what they are worth (usually is 100 bucks anyways) and say just gimme 100 bucks. Then you get the clowns that want like
400-500 bucks.
And thanks man. Its one of those good from afar but far from good trucks lmao starting to rot. Badly. And just found out today the trans is starting to slip...
(kisses his money) "bye bye!"
jord:
I'll tell ya.. they must put some schtuff in the water here in Indiana. I'm currently trying to work a deal on a car and the guys bottom dollar is $300.. I never tell them what I'd pay- I always ask "What are you trying to get out of it?" If they have already named a price via a call or ad, I'll go look at it and try and work it down once I get there- but if the price currently isn't worth the trip, I won't make the trip.
Ex: Guy has a Geo Metro- $500 bucks.. I doubt highly I could get him to $100 or $150 where it would warrant my time. That chimes the word "Next" in my head!
Good job, good score. At least you will have some cash towards your tranny job.
I have had some luck trying to buy cars just as you would at a dealership. I'll paint this picture for you. Lady had a 1993 Nissan Sentra- A Turd.. She came down to $200 on the phone.. with prices at the time it wasn't do-able. Had Steelies on it, didn't run.. beat to Dog Scratch.. I said "Look, best I could do is $150 cash" she balked, I kindly said "If you change your mind, my offer still stands" 5 hours later she told me to come and get it!
Never be afraid to walk away.. if the deal isn't worth doing.. just keep on a looking I say. This current vehicle I'm working on.. I'll net about $100 on the body alone, plus the cat, battery, alum rims, wiring, alternator.. all the cherries, I'll pull down a couple hundred profit easy on it- if that wasn't the case, I'd walk and move on.
I usually hear bout how "rare" the car is and it's worth a grand easily, that's bout the time they hear me hang up
Tater:
I think my favorite line I hear is "This is worth the asking price in Parts alone!" Ha.. well if you think you can part it out and make your $600 bucks, then once it is good and stripped and completely immobile.. is the magical car fairy coming to haul off the carcass for you?
Oh yeah if its soooo rare, and worth a grand WHY DON'T YOU SELL IT YOURSELF FOR A GRAND AND QUIT WAITING MY TIME. Idiots man. Total morons. Makes me want to rip my hair out.
i also get "i just did the brakes, brake lines and a full tune up!" oh good! Yeah people love buying used brake parts. Oh And The shredder loves new parts, they pay double actually if its new and shiny!
Idiiiootssss
This actually brings up a good point for discussion. How does everyone combat that. Let's make it blunt and honest: People love their cars- no matter what they are, they have attachment to them. They may have gotten a little "lovin" in that car, it may have been grandma's, it may have had $500 of new parts in it. But to us- that is irrelevant, so let's spark some discussion about how to gently pry these "what we know are scrap fodder" from folks- without being complete A-holes. I struggle with it myself- I know the problem, but have not found the "holy grail" of getting people to understand it and let go without throwing a fit!
..... Discuss!
Wow, very good points jord and sledge ! I usually talk em up a lil on how "great" a car it was in its day and gently move on to how outdated it is now and what a shame it is I can't offer them more for it. Works 50% of the time and if all else fails waving cash at em works sometimes too.
Tater-
Great Tip. I'm sure that takes some finesse though- maybe doing it for a while. I am a gentle conversationalist.. but I can't "B.S." very well as far as "Aww man what a sweet ride that once was" I'd talk too much and by the time I'm done they'd want double. I'd talk myself OUT of the deal.. must find my happy medium.
Sometimes i try to explain the work that goes into scrapping a car. Has maybe worked once... The biggest issue here is most people, if they don't like your offer, they move on to one of the other 15 ads currently online in my area. Frustrating thing is, most of those other adsguys will pay the 5-600 bucks that people want. Well then that sets he bar. Everyone wants that for every vehicle. Tough competition. Then you get the odd guy like today that just wants it gone and knows its worth next to nothing. I really hope this discussion brings up some good tips. So far so good!
I don't deal with cars as you know, but Sledge I think you answered part of that discussion with your own post.
Don't be afraid to walk away, an let'm know you'l be there when if they don't find a fool to part with that kinda money..minus the fool part..:)
Just my advice. It works for me in a lot of transactions with computers and other things I buy. It also works for pawn shops, thats how they can get people to take 30 bucks on a item worth 300. Don't be held hostage, an as my wife says...smile an mean it. Be nice, but firm.
The results I've listed work for me, an me alone, I in no way claim this will work for you, and I'm not responsible for any lost business coming from this post. :)
Sirscrapalot - Stupidity knows no bounds, just look at politics for proof. - Me
For sure sir scrap, never be afraid to walk away from a losing battle. And most of these "500$" for your junker ads are crap! Yeah they'll give you 500 for a 2008 or later car that's it ! Otherwise they'll offer a couple hundred tops for any other car like a normal person would. I hear people cry bout how much they have dumped into a money pit, well I hate for you but doesn't make it worth a dime more to me. And the "I could part it out for x amount" yes that might be true but how long is that gona take ?! A year ? Two ? Three ? And if there is x amount worth of parts there, would I pay you x ? So I can pull parts, store them, and go to the trouble of marketing them for free ? I dont run a charity here, Im out here to make money just like you. Anyone who's worked around salvage yards knows 95% of cars are crushed with less than half of the parts sold off of it. Most of these people with the "parting it out" theory are unaware of these facts and dont have the first clue about "parting it out" actually involves. Ive got parts I've pulled Probadly 5 years ago, after all the time I spent pulling them and storing them, doesn't look so gravy does it ?
Yep, just like folks who never dealt with ebay.."Oh well you could ebay it.." They don't realize it takes time, labor, etc to post an effective ad, deal with the idiot buyers you'll attract, seller ratings, ebay bs, etc. I see it the same with parts, it takes you guys time to break it down to the parts in question, find buyers, list your stuff, etc. So yea..silly. We're not talking 5 minutes to yank out an car AC ( I could be wrong but from what you(tater) cory, sledge, JG, all you awesome car guys I'm forgetting..) have said before...it can take hours to remove some parts.
People ignore this fact, either out of ignorance or sheer stupidity. Boggles my mind.
Anyhow..great thread, even for us folks who don't deal with cars. Like Scott/Noble with his posts on refining, safety stuff, thanks for the info on what you guys have to deal with. If I ever get into cars, at lest I can say I'm more educated then I was before I found a resource like this forum/thread. An will know how to deal with the situation if it comes up.
Sirscrapalot - Would rather have the knowledge an not need it, then to be clueless an have it happen to him.
Hours spent not scrapping and not getting paid til parts are sold not to mention special tools, knowledge and equitment. And beer, lots of it, aside from when I'm with the old ball and chain, my 9-5 not my wife, I don't wrench very well sober ! The are lots of junk yard short cuts you can take pulling a motor but it still takes longer than 10 minutes to do.
Awesome discussion gents. So how about this: I have a guy I messaged.. he has a vehicle.. I had no idea- it doesn't have a title- but as he informed me- it doesn't! Ok so this limits him now.. No Charity, No Junkyard, will come and take it- he can't take it to "pull-a-part" because he has no title. But he seems pretty staunch on his $500 "price" So now that I know he is screwed to get $500 bucks for it.. I'd like to nail it for say $200.. just looking to get him from his "Pie in the sky" back down to earth.
You forgot me! What am i chopped liver?!
Ohhhh wait you said awesome car guys...
LOL all joking aside, you hit the nail on the head sir scrap. (so has everyone else) They have no idea what it takes to part out a car. Here's what i go through parting out cars.
First you need the tools to do the job. Those aren't cheap! Second is the time. Very few alternators or compressors do only take 5 or 10 mins. Very few... Most are buried under a mountain of crap. And some parts require a hoist. Ok now we have to push the car into the shop. Cause lets face it. Most don't run. More time and effort. Third would be storage of parts and time to list ads. Iv got a whole room dedicate to parts storage. That's valuable realestate especially in a repair shop. And listing ads takes lot more time than most people think. Gotta take pics and upload them, and do this multiple times for each ad. Time adds up!
I don't know about you guys but i don't work for free. Every car takes me about 3hrs to strip. I do gas, cats, rads, wires (attach them to the hitch of the ram and FLOOR IT) drums/rotors, calipers, rims and tires and the alt, ac, ps pump if they are easy. Same with any alum. If its easy i grab it. I factor all that into my prices. And most people just don't understand/don't know.
Jord:
Chopped Livva... He He.
I'm not sure what the correct route to take with these folks.. Do you be an A-hole and say "Yeah.. go ahead.. strip it and part it out.. see how that works out for ya?" I don't see that as an option of landing a car personally.. but we all WANT to say that. On a car- complete -it probably takes me about 6-8 hours to gut it clean. I spend about 2 hours of that 6-8 though getting every sliver of wire I can get.. some folks don't do that. I also want to tell these folks that I know guys who own body shops- some of them are still stubborn enough to hold onto parts- so long they rot into the ground. They have lost time and $ because what once was worth say $65 dollars is now worth .10 cents a lb.. and they STILL don't want to part with it.
I think this is a lesson in human psychology.. maybe I need to start googling into that.. Maybe then you can convince people that what they have vs what they want.. we get everyone to a happy medium.
You'll always get people who are desperate for $, I picked up a van on the cheap because they guy had to have $ TODAY.. to buy.... cell phones. Go figure.. but whatever tickle you pickle I suppose!
You all are spending to much time per car.Like i always said you make more on quantity than 1 at a time.
You need to take off the cat, alt, battery, battery wires and anything on top easy to get to wire wise. Also the a/c pump, aluminum wheels and move onto to the next one.
You make next to nothing at my
400 in my opinion... To each their own but i wouldn't dare pay that. Had steel rims and bald tires. Cats on those aren't worth alot. Plus my time and fuel. Like i said i don't work for free. And besides now that you're paying 400, the next guy will pay 410. So on and so on. Driving prices way up till there's nothing left. That's already what's happened. People used to pay other people to remove cars...now everyone's paying more than scrap value. And its only goin up.
The name of the game is to make the most while spending the least. That's what any business strives to do.
Im gettin 190 per ton. But i also remove alot so the weight would be less. 3 hours isn't bad. I always make my hourly wage back. And i never have luck selling parts. Ive been sitting on a set of almost brand new tires for over a year now. Can't even give them away for 200 bucks for the set.
There may be some profit to some people but there's not enough profit to keep me interested. I don't scrap cars to make 100 bucks. Not with the work that's involved. Like someone before said "next"
Im not trying to be nasty here. Im just saying that paying hundreds for scrap cars doesn't net much profit. Not enough for me anyways.
Haha Jord!
Yes your in the "forgot group". ;) The ones I named are just much louder then you are my friend. :p I kid I kid. I value all you car guys as a resource. I'm going to claim lack of beverages for not remembering everyone. :p Plus they give me a lot more teasing then you other guys. LOL. Specially that Fudge fella, err Sledge..Darn it Brojer!
Brojer made me do it! o:)
Sirscrapalot - Enjoys the car experts on this forum, named an unnamed.
it would have brought around $333 or so.Yeah with steel wheels no but it it had alum then 400 wouldnt be bad and could have still made $100+
Well your moto is different than mine.If you remove what i said can be done in less then 1 hour or faster. You make a quick 100 but do 10 a week that' s 1k profit. If you are picky and dont want to pay nothing for cars and get 2 a week and make not much then have at it.
I have done this for 5 years plus and i am very successful at it.i dont try to get rich off of 1 car i make a min of 100 per but do 10+ per week.
I guess the difference is i do it for extra cash. Its not a business for me yet. Plus even if i wanted to pay more, there's not enough calls coming in. I get one or two calls a week. But hey i got another car tomorrow for free, so the good deals are out there. Its very rare that i get two cars back to back. Especially for dirt cheap. And i also don't have the time to do 10 cars a week. I work a 9-5 and all the work needs to be done after 5 or on weekends. So i gotta make enough off each one to make it worth it.
I don't deal with cars either but this happens to me everyday.
there is no right or wrong answer on what to do when scrapping a car other than the rules of your yard.
1st I scrap 99% of the time on the trailer
ive been in both situations, when im getting one or two cars a week which has been a while I will scrap the fire out of it getting every little piece, I will also do this at the end of the day after dustin has went home to have one ready to haul off in the morning
if ive got a backlog of 5 or 6 cars to go get I do one of two things
1.if I have the cash to buy all 6 cars I will run and pick them up bring them home and drop them off
2. if I don't have the cash I will run through them as fast as possible just getting the gas, converter, battery and aluminum wheels, ive got all the tools on the truck to do this on the side of the road or a vacant lot, ive even done it in the driveway of the person I bought the car from, anyway then ill haul the body in and have the cash for the next car, at the end of the day I have a truck bed full of wheels batteries and converters
as far as making a deal,
never get excited,
I buy mine blind meaning I don't drive anywhere unless its a driver and ive just started doing this(taking a few morefinancial gambles) I make my quote over the phone based solely on weight.
If you want some lines for learning to buy try selling to a salvage yard, they know them all but with the right cars you can still double or triple your money. I will typically say that model is too old for any of the parts to be any good to me, the key is to be nice to them while you are beating up the car you havnt seen yet.
its all about communication, remember they called you so the ball is in your court all you have to do is convince them your the best guy (or gal) to sell it to
Well then i guess its time for me to speak up. Or send you a 6 pack... Cause Im cheap. Whichever helps the most. Lol
But yeah Iv Been more active on the forum lately. Now that I got rid of my crackberry and back on an android phone i can access the forum on this thing anytime.
Oh well you do it for extra money and arent that busy so that is good for you.I do it for a living and thats all i do.Yeah i dont even buy off of craigslist there are way to many people on there trying.I buy and auctions so i have to pay more to get them in the first place. But if i can make 100 then i am happy and move on lol
1.Seems like you dont have many competitors to do that.
2.I am never out of money to buy cars you cant run like that.
gas do you use the gas or sale it?Also what do you drain it into and how do you drain it?
I dont do gas right now but i want to start.
I havent done nothing for a few months since i broke both wrist.i get my cast off wednesday.Once i get rolling again i am going to get a shop to get the stuff away from my house.
I have a 2 car trailer so i am ready to roll very soon.I will post some pics of my trailer soon.
Getting my dot magnets made for my truck and getting some business shirts made so i am about ready to roll.
I think Cory enlightened us about that. Drop the tank, cut the wires to the pump, most of the time the pump is in the tank. Connect that to a 12 volt battery charger and pump into a gas can.
Usually if a car's gas gauge is pointing empty there still is 10-20$ of gas minimum. Used his trick more than once. Its fun when you can go pick up a car, then pump the gas out using this method, and acquire enough gas for the trip picking up the car and going to the yard. And sometimes back again.
You are missing out if you don't take the gas.
http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/vehic...efi-style.html
yeah seems best to hot wire the relay.
Also do you guys sell the gas?
Nope I burn it in the pickup. I you can remove it from your overhead, your much better off keeping it. Keep that overhead low...more bucks in my pocket and less hassle.
