So I just started to scrap. And the other day I brought in metal which I think was steel. I brought a couple computer towers and a water heater and a car battery. When you bring in steel to the scrap yard. Is it also know as to them as shredder tin?

Computer towers and water heaters would be considered Shred...which is the lowest price usually.
Lest all my towers an heaters do..never had an alum one. lol If I could get an Alum water heater...that would be a nice payout. lol.
My yard doesn't use the term yours does, but we call it shred.

oo..forgot the battery. Should be getting a totally separate rate on that of course.

Also make sure you pull all the goodies out of the tower before selling it for shred. Mike

An your welcome. As Mike said, hold on to it, an do a little research on here so you can have a bit more knowledge the next time you visit a yard. The knowledge here is priceless, an you'll do a lot of reading and digging but it'll all be worth it when you see it in use.

My local steel yard calls light steel "tin". Typically light steel is anything under a 1/4 inch thick but there may be exceptions they will break out at specific places. Some bigger metro yards that have a lot more people in the area will break out different types if stainless steel but some places just divide between non-magnetic and magnetic ss. My steel yard throw magnetic ss in with the "tin". If in doubt ask them when you show up and let them look at something to see where it should go.

Make sure to pull any brass fittings and anything worth more value, and have a bucket or other container for them. By theirselves are not worth a lot, but sure a lot more than shred right now.

Like Sirscrapalot said. carry around a magnet. I carry one on my pocket knife. I got mine from scrapping a hard drive, they are the best plus they a free.. The magnet comes in handy. I received a truck load of PC's, out of the 20 or so I found 1 Mac pc. Its case was all aluminum, plus had a aluminum frame. Good Hunting
