Out by me, its pretty urban. typical suburbs. garbage pickup is wednesday around 12ish. ive noticed the big stuff, appliances, grills, etc. are out early, say 6 o clock on tuesday. I make a weekly run around 8 30.
What times are usually the best (if you go early you may get something big but no one has anything out. if you wait to long its picked over)
I do the same thing every Tuesday night and Early Wed, Morning
I'm out in Garbage night every Sunday night, Monday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night.. I could go to a garbage night every night minus Sunday, but just be a longer drive.
Usually start by 7:30pm.

I have called the garbage companies and have a full scedule of their routs in town, but gas is getting so expensive and the tweekers are willing to fight over an electric cord so im looking at new Ideas. good luck, you will learn much here.

I do both. Residential is easy because of the obvious cluster...Commercial is a bit more scattered, and something I don't really make a route for...just one of those if I'm there, i'll check.
No, the extent of my scrapping is either garbage hunting or checking the free section on CL. I Just stay in the neighborhood (dont stay out long, maybe til 9:15 or so)
There are so many people doing it right now that for a part-timer it's difficult to find stuff the night before garbage day. If you get lucky you find it within 30 minutes of it being put out. Otherwise it's gone. I find my best stuff on non-garbage nights. If they have an appliance, it's likely getting put out no matter what day it is. You have a better window to find it. But even then, several of the other scrappers will run every neighborhood at least once a day.
My best days are Saturday and Sundays, but only in areas without Monday pickup. The garbage trucks usually roll earlier on Saturday. If an item gets put out that afternoon, I find I have a better chance of getting it. It seems I see less scrappers on the road on Saturday than any other day. Also rain seems to keep them away. They'll still run areas that have garbage pickup the next day, but tend to stay away from the others.
I know this sounds bad, but I am ready for prices to crash. Huge price swings are great. Let prices fall to $7 per 100lb on shreddable and you find 5 times as much.
I do my best on Saturdays and Sundays too. Doesn't seem to be as many other scrappers out there then. There are lot of people doing it around here too, but only if it fits their schedule and isn't too hot, cold, wet, etc. I actually had best best runs during this last heat wave...lol.
I find all times have a possibility, if say wed is a garbage day. The fun starts on Tues . But i also find at the last moment during garbage truck pick up one will get some hits from people put stuff out late. True about Hot or Cold , less competition during inclement weather.
I noticed early in the morning of pick up day their is so much more trash out. ( bin late to work few times) But the night before I always see the same scrappers trucks going by over an over each time they have more so I guess the best way is to drive your area a few times... After work. Before dinner. After dinner. Before bed. Wife wakes u in middle of night
well for me it comes down to filling up the truck . you never know what mother load you will find / garbage day or not . Seems that if you just get out on the road some how it happens. In our economy people consume & get rid of what disturbs them, much of it has metal. whats nice is many home owners are sensitive to the scrapers as they leave item in plane view
If i see the home owner i often say thank you & give a smile.
we dont have garbage in front of houses between curb and sidewalk we have alleys behind houses do you still go to these places at night or only by curb there isnt much traffic around here thru alleys at night just dont want to get in trouble wouldn't mind working at night though lot cooler its been 100 degrees for like 40 days in a row
by car and curb, LUCK !! Dumpsters behind building i'll take a look & grab but we should get permission . Night i am not crazy about gotta have a flash light you end up standing out . All in All no one wants to have to enplane them selves to the police
I go out night before trash day at about 8pm. Right before sun goes down and after dinner. Go around my neighborhood and spend about 2 hours and usualy get half a pickup truck load or better each week.
Another thing. Garage sales are common on Fridays and Saturdays. Make a note of them when you drive by and check back after they're over. A lot of times the leftover stuff ends up by the curb.
ive done some "field research" and found atleast for me the best time to look is:
after dinner (around 5 pm)
i ride my bike and just go around my subdivision a few times. i stopped driving because i get aobut 14mpg.
i have a milk crate set up on the back. haha i have carried everything from 19402 hassock fans, to camcorders to satellite dishes in there. i get some looks lol.
the only time i drive is if i see something big (industrial size micro last week) there isnt much chance that it will get taken as i am only about 5 minutes to the house and back.
because it gets dark around 8 now, thats about when i go in. it will get tough trying to balance 2 ap classes, track, and scrapping :(
Around 6 or 7 pm in the evening is sometimes good. Before dark.
I normally roll the truck out an hour or 2 before the garbage truck starts it's rounds in the morning.
I have known as the rubbish organizations and have a complete scedule of their routs in city, but gas is getting so costly and the tweekers are willing to combat over a powered cable so im looking at new Thoughts. enjoy, you will understand much here.

They come out in the evening. They come out late at night and in the wee hours of the morning. They come with vans and trucks. They know the recycling collection routes. They are scavengers and, according to some, they are causing a problem for the Big Apple's recycling program.
As commodity prices for paper and metals have risen, those seeking to make some cash have increasingly begun targeting New York City's curbside recycling program, depriving it of valuable material and complicating its operations.
"We've known, historically, because we've run into this in the past, that when the price of metal, particularly copper, is high, or [when] the price of paper is very high, you will see the theft of recycling," says NYC Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty, who notes that some refer to the scavengers as "poachers."
In 2007, NYC officials were seeing an uptick in theft of recyclables. In response, the city passed a law mandating that anyone caught taking recyclables or appliances set out on the curb for recycling using a vehicle can have their vehicle impounded and be slapped with a $2,000 fine. People collecting bottles and cans on foot aren't covered by the law and have traditionally not been a concern of the department, says Doherty.
Despite the law, numbers from the department suggest there is still a rising problem with theft. In 2009, there were over 80 vehicle impounds in NYC for the theft of metals or paper from curbside recycling. In 2011, that number is over 470.
The problem has been particularly bad for appliances set out for recycling, due to a rise in the price of metal commodities. Last year, nearly half of all appliances put out for collection for recycling were removed before they could be picked up by the department.
Doherty says that NYC has a contract with Sims Metal Management to recycle the scrap, which is being adversely affected by the scavenging.
With the decline in the newsprint industry, the amount of paper being collected in NYC has already been on the decline, according to Doherty, which is only being exacerbated by the theft. He says that the city makes as much as $13 a ton on paper, revenue the city is losing out on.
Additionally, he states that city has made big investments in personnel and equipment to collect recyclables and a return on this investment isn't being realized due to theft.
"You make an investment in the equipment and the personnel with the expectation that you're going to be out there collecting a certain amount of recyclables, and when you have these inconsistencies because of theft, your ability to plan for the future becomes more difficult," says Doherty.
In response to the situation, the department will be looking into trying to get a new law passed that will raise the fines for taking recyclables and giving the department expanded authority to deal with the issue, says Doherty. The department has also begun scrutinizing scrap yards more.
According to a recent article in Resource Recycling magazine by director of the NYC Department of Sanitation's Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling, Robert Lange, growth in scavenging for recyclables has run parallel to the developments with the city's municipal recycling program and is likely to become an increasingly complex issue as more people flock to urban environments.
"While the scavenging of recyclables is a problem in many jurisdictions regardless of housing density, it is a particularly acute problem in dense urban centers where scavengers can more easily and efficiently collect large volumes of recyclables, with or without using a vehicle," said Lange.]
Just another way for "big Brother" to hold us down........To me if it's on the curb it's fair game.......If the city wants to recycle they should schedule appointments just like everyone else and not be entitled to metal on the curb..........There are of course two sides to the coin but trust this the cities get plenty of other recyclables such as paper, glass, and plastic and in mass quanity they make good money on these items........I don't have a problem with the cities recycling but fining and impounding vehicles is just hurting an already slow economy..........I am a consumer as well as a scrapper and the money I spend in the community stimulates the economy and makes the world go round............CYA
I agree. I live 15-20 miles away from the closest town, and anytime I take my truck somewhere, I make sure I bring it back at the very minimum, half full. But keep your eyes peeled and you'll be surprised.Quote:

Where I live we have "junk days" in all of the little towns in my area. This happens once a year and towns typically have have there "junk days" on diffrent weeks and weekends. The towns like scrappers to wait till sunday after everyone has picked over the stuff that still works. Most dont wait though. Anyways there is alot of stuff like electronics and appliances. I got 8 radiators and a few electronics, I also picked up some counter tops but I had a use for those.
