Ebay

I have an ebay account, but never sold anything on ebay..just signed up for one way back when, in the even that I ever wanted too.

Well, I got a HEAP of baseball cards, and some other stuff, that I just want rid of.

My card collection is a mixture of baseball (90%), football and basketball (10%).

Not sure what I have if anything worth of value, but what I was planning to do, was look each one up (probably will take one to two months off and on), and any of them that are worth a few bucks sell on ebay. The rest, I will just yard sale or swap meet them.

Anyways, my question is simple. With ebay, do you pay upfront to sell, or at the end of the auction, or once per month?

To me, I don't care either way, but like anything I do, I just want to be prepared. Thanks.

You will need a Paypal acct. Ebay invoices monthly. There is a insertion fee for each item plus what ever extra's you use of there's to make your post/add. They are always letting you insert for free if you follow certain rules. Once an item sells you will be assessed a final valuation fee of about 11%(goes on the monthly invoice) and the funds from the sale that go into your Paypal acct will be assessed a fee of about 3% by Paypal. All said and done total fees are about 15%, some say it's outrageous, I say try and find some way to advertise to millions for less.

Unless your cards are pre 84 or so, they are not worth trying to sell on e-bay. That is around the time that all of the card companies started selling box sets which means that anyone who collected cards was able to get the entire set without a bunch of extras. This is also when people started buying multiple sets of everything to hoard away for a rainy day.

Hopefully yours are older.

You will also need some supplies and materials as well as a decent rating on e-bay. Get a rating from buying your supplies on e-bay. postage scale, tape gun, etc. Or just get a few cheap items that you can use as Christmas gifts or something like that.

May want to list some of the card in groups. Like all the same cards for one team or all one team in one year. Auctions will go higher amounts for more cards and you can save on shipping.
Plus you can get free usps boxes for DVDs to ship the cards in so they don't get bend in the mail system. You can order them from usps.com

The hardest part is getting a good rating built up. Then the buyers are not so leery of buying from you. When I first started out I had to price stuff real cheap just to get someone to buy. Kind of a vicious circle.

Ebay is currently running a thing where you can list up to 50 items per month without any insertion fees. That is with a starting bid at any price as well. I sell on ebay constantly but only list 50 items a month to keep the fees down. I also have two names so I can list 100 items a month without paying insertion fees. They will still get you on the final value fees and PayPal fees as mentioned.

Its cool. Once tax time rolls around, if things haven't picked up for it by then, I will invest into some advertising.

Yeah, to me their fees are one of the BIGGEST reasons, as to why I never sold on there before.

Also, if you are just starting with ebay you will not get your money until you ship the item to the winning bidder and wait three days ofter they get it.

Well, when do they exactly pay for the item? I sure am not going to sell someone something, and expect them to pay me upon delivery.

You do not ship until they pay...then Paypal holds it until they (Paypal) is satisfied that your customer is satisfied. As mentioned above there are several different scenario that can release your money from Paypal. This hold thing is fairly new. You also get a bit of a discount if you buy the postage from Ebay and it automatically updates the tracking numbers as well as send an email to the customer that item has shipped.

The buyer pays Paypal, Ebay puts a hold on the funds, until it is delivered, but they will allow you to use up to 15.00 for shipping (I think only if you use the online shipping). I was not aware of that fact, because I don't sell that often, I have been with ebay since 1995 and never had a problem. Well here I am twenty days later and still haven't received my funds......We will see Monday if I will get paid.....I just didn't want anyone else to get caught off guard like I did.

This only applies to the seller. If you don't give a delivery confirmation number to ebay and the buyer doesn't leave feedback then they will hold them funds for 21 days. Also, this only applies to sellers with under 100 feedbacks

As a Buyer you only have to pay Paypal thats all.

Here's a screenshot of an order I'm getting ready to send out Mon. I print out the shipping label and I get a few cents discount on the shipping using the ebay system. Here is the shipping label I just bought; it took it automatically out of my paypal. I just print it and glue it on my package and it's ready to go; If I was lazy I could call USPS and the mailman would pick my packages up.

Everyplace the package goes, they (USPS) scans the barcode and at any time, me or my customer can click on the tracking # and see where the package is at.

So, if I understand you correctly, if I use ebay.com shopping process, they will unfreeze up to $15 that I can use towards shipping correct?

Every time I've used USPS tracking the item arrives long before any tracking activity shows up.

Must be that government efficiency I am always hearing about...

I have had the same issue. Unfortunately, only works when the employees are not to lazy and actually scan the packages

It did come in real handy when one of my orders did not show up at the customers and he messaged me about it. I checked the # and it said out for delivery. Told the customer, and his post office said no, it's not. Waited a couple of days, and it still said out for delivery. I went to my post office and filed a complaint, and the postmaster called to their post office and basically told them to check their dam* delivery vehicle. Sure enough it had been riding around in the truck for over a week.

lol. nah. While I don't know him all that well, I get the feeling he actually does his job. Above and beyond even.

George, the tracking eventually updates so I dunno what they're doing.

UPS is usually spot on for me. At 11:42 it arrived at XYZ. At 8:39 it arrived at ABC. At 7:32 it went out for delivery. Etc.
