Original Xbox console breakdown first edition black unit

Ok here is a detailed list on how to properly dismantle a original Xbox system . Some of these units can be used for modification but the resale value is next to nothing for these units . The components inside this one we're all faulty . It had some exsposure to the elements.


Send your assistant for a Alan key set and a flathead , he may have to make 2 trips



Flip the console over and remove the 4 rubber grip plugs . Here is a before and after



Use t20 torq or 3 mm key to remove the 4 screws , these screws can be used to peel up the area around the hidden screws . there are 2 more hidden under stickers . See below





Pop the top , should just lift off .


The sheet metal on the plastic outer case is steel as well as all of the screws you will remove . There is a screw in the center in between the cd/dvd drive and the hard drive . Remove this with a t9 or 2 mm key



Hard drive plastic housing lifts off , use the flat head to guide it up if it's being stubborn .disconnect wire from hard drive and remove hard drive from plastic rail using a t15/2.5 mm key .




the cd/DVD drive is being held in by two screws , remove them using t10 . The drive and the plastic frame will come out . The screws are on the front towards the lower left . The plastic rail comes out simillar to the hard drive .

At this point disconnect all wires , t10 the screws to remove the motherboard 12 screws and the power board 2 screws.

here you can see the rust on the inside of the heat shield .


Remove the 4 screws in the front of the console t10 to remove controller ports and eject board.



Pull off sheet metal from outer case , use gloves for safety , this can be sharp metal . Here is what you should have left.


Here is the motherboard , weighing in at .55 #'s

Steel scrap 1.15 #'s


Plastic abs 2.3 #'s


Dvd cd drive weighing 1.7 #'s


Hard drive weighs a pound , this can be further broken down .



You can also get the transformers and aluminum from the power strip and break down the dvd cd drive as well.
Additional items that you will have . .25 #'s wire , .45 #'s extruded aluminum , .45 #'s power board
Controller ports ,fan, and eject board did not register on my scale .

Max weight is 150 lbs , I like it because it is easily portable and not too heavy .

Not trying to dodge your question but it's worth more than a rusted out broken Xbox . I'm going to further breakdown the cd/DVD drive and hard drive here in this thread . The pictures should give you a good idea what's what . It's also hard for me to give a estimate on this breakdown thread because not all of the items have enough substantial weight to register on this scale . If I were to break down 10 it would be a easier calculation on material and I could simply divide by the number of units . I will continue to provide weights and pictures , hope my next post in this thread helps clarify some of your questions .

I would guess at this point $2.32. Upon full breakdown I think we can double that . The cd/DVD drive and hard drive have boards , we can get the hard drive down to cast . There is some copper coil aluminum and transformer on the power board .

Here is the dvd drive , remove the four screws holding on the cover with a Phillips head screw driver.


Remove the top board , should pop out . There is also a few motors inside , be sure to check for a disk . I'm not removing the other components , I will put the top back on at this point on its way to the shred pile .



Onto the hard drive .
